'83 Peugeot UO14 refurbish thread

I wish I'd taken some pics when I'd first gotten it, but it was a decent, if not trustably reliable bike when I got it. This is as it stands now, with the headset bearings about done. I've also mounted new tires, replaced the crank bearings and polished up the gearset and pedal arms. The whole thing had a light, old dirty film that wouldn't just spray off. I had to scrub every square inch with a nylon brush and Simple Green. Afterword I took some rubbing compound to polish it out as the whole thing was just dull. After looking black when I started, it's now a pleasing Midnight Blue.

Right now I'm in the middle of polishing all the shiny bits and those get mounted next.

After:

I've got a nice brown seat and some bar tape that's a metallic green or blue depending on the angle. I've pretty much gotten all the parts I need so progress should be fairly quick.

This was the nicest of the UO series even though my favorite is still the UO 10 as that was my first touring bike. Good looking job on this bike.

I've taken the brakes apart and cleaned/polished them up, and added some new Kool-stop pads.

Cleaned/polished the pedals and toestraps, then went ahead and mounted them up. I'm still waiting on the toestraps, those should be in soon.

Added a new brown seat.

Cleaned/polished the shifters, got them mounted up with new cables. Not the greatest pic, as they're a little grimy from me handling them while setting into place.

Closeup shot of main tube graphic:

Headset bearings all taken care of, handlebars and reflectors mounted, chain installed. It's almost ready for the road, I'm just waiting on some replacement brake levers to get here and I can wire them up.

Looks great, what did you choose for the wheels and rear cassette/freewheel? I'm guessing not original. Interesting that any time some one posts about a Peugeot UO14, I expect to see the same bike as I have but never. Guess they did things really different up here in Canada.

Very nice clean bike. Did you wax after the polish? The wax really brings out the shine again.

The wheels and rear hub were one of the few things I didn't touch, except for the tires. They are 27 x 1.25 Weinnman wheels, and I'm not sure what the hub is as the prior owner said it was replaced after failure. Oddly, the tires I got were 27 x 1.25" and fit the wheels just fine, but their profile seems a bit bigger and I was just able to squeeze the wheel in past the dropouts.

As for the wax, no that hasn't been done yet, I plan to do so after everything's together and I can give it one last cleaning wipedown.
