Dad's Schwinn Super Sport circa 1969

Schwinn Super Sport
Hi, my dad used to work PR for Schwinn in the late 60s. He passed this summer. I have his Schwinn Super Sport and want to donate it to someone who would like to rehab it. Garage stored for 50 years. Northwest of Chicago near Ed Rudolph Velodrome.

I am sure someone here will give it a great rehab. Too far for me. I grew up on a Schwinn.

It's always a bit hard to deal with things from our parents. I know I've gone through that process as well.

You may want to post this in the classic and vintage forum. There are a number of posters there who rehab and ride old bikes. A 60s era Schwinn supersport is a neat bike. I know I've looked to buy one here in Iowa where I live, but they're not that easy to find. A lot of the posters in C&V are from the Chicago area and they can give you some idea of how to find a good home for that bike.

I'm in Evanston (and ride out that way when the weather is warmer), and while the bike is a bit out of my wheelhouse (though I do have a later model Super Sport), I'd be happy to help you find it a new home. For starters, getting some pictures and frame dimensions up on the forum would seem to be in order. My email address is in my sig below. If you forward some photos to me, I can post them here.

Picture Assistance

(OP tried to post a pic with their post. I'm going to guess it's a 24" C-T frame, as I have two that size. Nice bike!
Sorry for your loss, OP.)

I had one just like that. Same year, color, chrome fork, size (24"), everything. I bought it new in '69 when I was 15. $139 I think. I sold it in the early eighty's. It was recently given back to me about four years after being in a flood and spending about ten days completely submersed in muddy water. It never moved from that spot until I brought it back home. I only cleaned it up a little to see if it was salvageable, and it doesn't look that bad, considering. Kind of amazing.
Thats what Schwinn called a 24" frame, but it measures 22-3/4" or 58cm center to top.

After I got home with it.
As it was when I brought it home.

After a quick wash.

I'm glad you moved this from introductions to C&V. If you were closer to Des Moines, I know I'd be interested. Those old Schwinns are cool bikes. Good luck passing it on to a good home.

That's a great story. Yeah those bikes were designed to survive the zombie apocalypse and this one did!

I have one the same size. It's what Schwinn called a 24", but it measures 22-3/4" (58cm) center to top of top tube. See my other post above.

Corrected my post.

Remeasured, and both my '64 and '72 tape out to 24" C-T(op of seat tube), with the seat tube extending an inch or so above the top tube, depending on how one measures.

Schwinn did call it a 24", but it does maybe feel more like a 58 cm?

Top tube is 22.5", 57.15 cm C-C.

I just rechecked mine. It measures 22-3/4" (58cm) center to top of top tube, and 24-1/4" center to top of seat tube. And, as a bonus, 22-1/4" top tube length, center to center.
I also have a 22-1/2" Schwinn Sports Tourer, which measures, center to top (of top tube) 21-1/4" (54cm) and 22-3/8" to top of seat tube.
Anyway, someone needs to go get the op's Super Sport. It looks to be in great shape.
I just posted the size info in case someone was trying to figure out if it would fit them, to point out that although Schwinn called it a 24" frame, it really measures more like a 23".

Sorry about your dad. I had a '71 SS and loved it. AIR, it cost $150, and wish it was still in the quiver. I'm in socal, so not feasible.

Hi Joy, very sorry for your loss.

I don't have much at all from my Dad in the way of possessions and he was not really a bike guy but he could ride and made sure I had good bikes.

I would have loved to have a bike of his. He did ride motorcycles and was a pretty good wrench so he passed both of those things on to me and they have served me well all my life.

I know its not what you're asking for but I would encourage you to try and find somebody in the family to take this on.

Bikes to me and us here have more soul than anything else we normally deal with and as you can see stand the test of time better than many things.

You may be able to find someone from here that is close to you to help or take it on to keep it near.

Take care

You remind me of Derek in "Vice Grip Garage" Yes, that's how he spells it, either accidentally, to get around the Visegrip trademark, or as a clever play on words. The guy finds abandoned cars, mostly General Motors from the 1950s - 1980s and fixes them up enough to drive home, sometimes hundreds of miles. Cool YouTube series for gearheads.
