Not really a tan color.....
More like "Cola" colored as on previous Conti tires.....

Looks like a GP5k version of the GP Classic with reddish-brown skinwalls I've been riding for a couple of years, with different tread -- well, pretty much no tread on the GP5k. The GP Classic as that raised center tread and shallow sipe pattern. Great tires, especially with latex tubes. Really tames the chatter on chipseal.

Andy_K 02-06-21 09:15 PM

I've got a set of these, waiting for dry weather before I put them on a bike.

So the cool news to me is this new GP5K Transparent flavor is available in both 25mm and 28mm. The previous TdF Special Edition was only available in 25. Wish they also did the Transparent in 30/32, but whaddya gonna do? Fugeddaboutit!

The not-so-cool news is the only place I found 28s was Wiggle, at $78ea. Ouch. I don't really need any more 28mm tires, and I didn't look very hard, but that's getting up there in price for me.

The other cool news, that at least I think is news to me, is that the black/black 5K is available in 28/30/32. I knew about/have the 28/32, didn't realize they also had an in-between 30mm. That in-between size may come in handy in my never-ending quest for maximum rubber. Nothing jumps to mind at the moment, but I may have a just-right fit for 30mm somewhere.

I like these so much better than the almost white sidewalls of the others. GP Classics were a favorite of mine for the color of the sidewall, among other things.

Let's send the Cycling News writer and editor back to grammar school!

The “Uncola” has my vote! Those sidewalls would look so right with my Brooks. Doesn’t hurt that the bike in mind is BRG also.

hsuBM 02-07-21 08:37 AM

I wonder if it’s actually that color or if it’s bad photography...

mstateglfr 02-07-21 07:57 PM

waiting with hope for Conti to release a 32mm version. come on guys, challenge Panaracer and RH in the 30+mm tan sidewall road tire arena.

Wow, today, I am mounting some tires on rims. Two of these, the Conti GP5000 in tan (marked Tour de France), and two black ones. Oddly, the former were staggeringly more difficult to get onto the rims, while the black ones popped right on. MAYBE it's the rims, but I am a little skeptical on that. The tan ones went on wheels where I've now noticed have mismatched rims -- one Rigida and one Wolber; the black ones went on Ukai rims.

That's probably it. The tires noticed the rims were mismatched and didn't want any part of such a style faux pas.

I'll report back about how mine go on. I'll be using them with DT Swiss R460 rims.

Way different. The sidewalls are translucent brown like the original Sport 1000 and the recent Grand Prix Classic.

noglider 02-08-21 12:45 PM

I have GP4000S-II tires in 28mm. I'm so impressed with them, they ride like wider tires (in a good way). I'm glad the 5000s come in unblack and 28mm. They are something for me to look forward to.

pcb 02-08-21 01:11 PM

I did a quick check on USA-based vendors stocking the 30mm GP5k/black, didn't turn up any yet. And by not turn up, I mean there were no mentions of that size in order-page copy, no "30mm (out of stock)" choice/msg appearing in drop-down menus. Like that size doesn't exist here yet. It feel like the 30mm is a relatively new introduction, and not readily available yet.

I'm not looking/ready to buy soon, too much snow on the ground, and on the way, to need any extra rubber right now. But if anybody's in a hurry for this size, you may need to cool yer jets a bit.

And while I'm semi-whining, why doesn't Conti make the 650b GP5k in anything wider than 28mm? It's be really nice to have more options for light/supple/modern 650b rubber in 32/38/+ widths.

Fair enough. I've just never really liked anything darker than a Pasela or Turbo Cotton. Even Gravelkings are a bit dark for my tastes, at least for a performance road tire. With higher volume tires, dark sidewalls are okay.

I've owned the Sports and the Classics and they can look great with bright colors and silver rims but I just mounted Soma Supple Vitesse tan walls on a bike and actually thinking of picking up a pair of the GP 5000 TDF before they're sold out. (wish they were available in 28 though)

Just pointing out the visual difference between the "un-black" 5000 and Gatorskins.

majmt 02-08-21 06:32 PM

Here’s a comparison shot of newly built wheels using GP Classic tires (having what looks like the same “cola” sidewalls) that I want to run to save wear on the vintage Clement tubulars. For common reference, I’d say the color is a pretty good match to the color of seasoned brake lever hoods. Haven’t had a chance to ride them but I have high hopes.

Love Conti's.

Like the new color, thanks OP!

Like the creme version sidewalls but don't expect them to stay anywhere near that clean for very long.

Am OK with the root beer classic color, but not the compounds.

One day I'll be happy. One day.

Love both the tdf sidewalls as well as these new ones. I went with Vittoria Corsa G's in 25 as my most recent tires as I was worried about finding a replacement tdf GP5000. If the tdf GP5000 was more available I would have gone with those. So far the Vittoria's are great though!
