What's not "vintage"?

So everyone has their own criteria, but exclusion is likely not the usual method.

I'll start:

- any decal/sticker with a hologram (far from the line)
- black anodized aluminium (not so far)

Unpossible to determine criteria.
But I know it when I see it.

Even if it could be determined what is vintage, it would change every year.

What is classic is the question that will be harder to answer.

if you can climb without having to mash, it's either not vintage or you decided that a 13-21 6-speed freewheel is not a great choice for practical riding

This subject has been addressed to death. Vintage is defined by time, not this, that, or the other thing, in my opinion.

black anodized parts were pretty sexy back in the mid 70's.

What you like is considered vintage?

Kind of a really sucky superpower.

... or you live in the flatlands of Florida or parts of the great plains where a highway bridge is the closest thing to the Col du Tourmalet.

If the stereos that were sold in same year were silver then bike = vintage
Else bike = black plastic crap era

Again, far too subjective, eye of the beholder, yada, yada.

We all have our threshold, bias, feelings, beliefs, etc.

Most of us know it when we see it, in our humble or not opinion.

IMHO, this is.

Yes time and have a look at https://eroica.cc/en/eroica-cc/ethos where a nice set of vintage criteria for one of the most popular vintage rides is discussed including a date of 1987 and categories including bike, clothing, and accessories.

The problem with exclusion is that it is an endless list and there is always an exclusion to the rule.

I'm with @merziac on this one, I know it when I see it. Especially since it is a balance of time, manufacturing method and type of bike.

Aluminum? There were bikes in the 30's made from this material.
Lugged? Road bikes often stopped using them in the 80's though many commuter bikes used them until the late 90's and some touring bikes had them until the early 00's.
Sloping head tube? Welcome to the world of 80's MTBs.

The brakes and the hubs, especially... maybe it was the white lettering that contrasted so nicely with the black parts?
or maybe I was just young and impressionable? Doesn't matter.
