Hello.
Can I make powder coating repaint of the frame? Is it safe for steel frame?

Absolutely safe for steel. Some C&V aficionados feel that powder coating negatively affects the lines of the lugs on lugged bikes. I have two steel frames/forks that I had powder coated. One is a two stage that cost $180 and one is a single stage with a cost of $100. One is lugged and one is, I believe, tig welded. The picture is of my late 80's Ochsner lugged steel.

worked for this Serotta.just be sure to prep properly-insert an old BB to protect the threads & keep them bare,properly face the BB & headtube when completed.

I have had a half dozen steel frame bikes powder coated. The guy I have do it does a great job. I never end up with 'syrupy' looking lugs.

If lugged make sure they know how to handle as if they are patio furniture specialists you can loose sharp lugs.

I've heard that powder coating is prone to slight cracking because paint is not elastic enough and all this could lead to unnoticed corrosion

Where'd you get that done? I can add it to my powder coat thread to keep track of powder coaters that do a good job with bike frames.

Not in my experience, and not anymore than wet paint.

checkout the selection of shades to include clear metalflake.very reasonable-tri color fade $150. frame+fork.they don't media blast but do a chemical dip prior to refinishing.

So heat treating in powder coating also harmless?

The temperature for baking the powder coating does not get hot enough to affect steel, titanium or aluminum. I do not know about CF. It just cures/hardens the pc.

powdercoating needs an electrostatic charge, so metal is all thats powdercoated as a general rule. Ive read that other materials such as plastic and carbon fiber can be powdercoated thru an extra step that creates an electrostatic charge. Whatever you coat needs to withstand 400ish degrees(pretty sure) when the powder is baked.

I don't think I will be buying or repainting carbon frame. For now steel frame all is I intend to repaint.

mstateglfr is correct about heat during powder-coating, and my experience with Carpet Fibre is that it will delaminate at heats of 330*. So powder on CF is not an option. I work with golf shafts daily as a golf professional and that heat number is pretty much spot on. I have produced a number of papers, power points, and videos which document the heat numbers. I am not too sure that 300* on a steel frame silver brazed would do any damage other than some mild annealing of the metal. I have had a number of steel frames powder coated and have documented some of them here in BF. My experience is that it is a good and safe method to recover a frame color. Smiles, MH
