Thoughts on Correcting FD
Below is a FD1055 that I had planned on using with a build. However when placed on the DT, I noted the "irregularities" of the FD on the frame. Thoughts on if it is correctable with a "little coercion" with a pair of pliers? Also, I'm trying to figure out how the FD got in this condition, aka with way did it take a blow so that I can force it back into its correction orientation, if possible. I definitely don't want to tighten the clamp on the DT for fear of crimping the Prestige tubing with the lower edge of the clamp out of alignment.

Let’s start with a question: is that the correct size clamp for the down tube? Clamps come in 28.6, 31.8, and 34.0. That may be a 28.6 on a 31.8 tube.
If the clamp is the correct size, then tou have some serious alignment issues. Very difficult to correct alignment on a cast part like the clampwithout splitting it. Cage can easily be bent into shape, but the clamp... |
I'd try clamping it down on a 28.6mm steel tube that you wouldn't mind gouging, but I agree with Doc that the chances of the clamp snapping are likely high.

The frame is a Schwinn Prologue so it should be a 28.6 diameter DT. I may try finding some scrap pipe of similar diameter and tighten the clamp around it just for kicks. If it doesn't work, there's not a whole lot lost in the FD. I'll just start over and look for another 1055. Thanks for the feedback!

The cage looks like there was an impact that rotated it around the seat tube to the extent that it hit the rear tire

This is common. The swing out side of the clamp is fairly soft. You can bend it outwards until it fits correctly.
In any event I would use a Braze-on FD and an adapter clamp. That way if I need to adjust the height of the FD I dont need to move the clamp and mar the seat tube unnecessarily. |
