Will a 7 speed wheel work on an 8 speed shifter?

I have a campy Athena which has an 8 speed wheel.

The wheel is having issues and wondering if a 7 speed wheel set would work ?

Or even a 6 speed ?

Here are some pics

Really appreciate your help

For frames with 126 mm spacing at the rear, 7 speed Shimano works well with 8 speed Ergo shifters.

I've done it with good results. 8 speed ergo shifters and a 8 speed Racing T derailleur, and a 7 speed freewheel. Rode it for at least a couple of months with no issues.

Thank you for your responses!!!
Really very much appreciated

Would I just measure with the wheel out and place a ruler where the skewers go?

And would I measure inside to inside?

Never done this before

Thank you again

I have one set up on one of my bikes, it works without issue. You have to reset your derailleur stops and thats it.

If that bike came with that Campy 8 speed groupset originally, then it's going to have 130mm spacing.
You can just add some washers to the locknuts to space a 126mm Shimano hub to 130mm. You'll also need a longer axle and quick release.

You are talking about 1/8th inch difference. The rear frame will flex a little to accommodate the difference. No spacers needed.

Thanks guys

Really appreciate the help !!

It came with the wheel shown, but when I take it out and out it back in, I have to spread the back slightly. I put a 6 speed wheel I had to see how it would fit.

Fits perfect,.

No spreading of the frame, so maybe that would be best for a 7 speed ???

My friend has a set of Campy wheels complete 7 speed . I think I will go that route.

I really do not care about 8 speeds vs 7.

I mean....how many gears do we actually use riding ********** :) :)

Thank you ALL again for your help.

Greatly appreciated !!!!!!!

What seems to be the problem with the original 8s wheel?

Using a 7s freewheel will allow allow use of Hyperglide cogs that will greatly improve shifting performance over your current 8s Sachs/Maillard 8s freewheel.

bikemike73 04-02-21 02:51 PM

Hey dddd

The 8s wheel could NOT be " trued" I was told by a bike shop, so I acquired a 7 speed wheel set Shimano cassette for " short money"

I have a Campy wheel set coming from a friend of mine in a few weeks as well

AND...I brought the wheel to my friend who used to OWN the bike shop, and HE TRUED IT at his house !!!!!

I will keep as an extra. I am going with the 7 speed.

Really like you comments on smoother shifting !!!! :) :)

Thank you for your and every ones help.

It is greatly appreciated

Hey Manny66 and anyone else

How do you " reset the derailleur stops" as mentioned above by manny66 ?

Thank you all again for all your help.

Greatly appreciated !!

dddd 04-07-21 03:27 PM

The "stops" are set using the limit screws on the derailer, keeps the chain from riding past the end-mounted sprockets.

Greatly appreciated 🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🙂
