Threaded valve stem on FMB tubular?

I received a pair of FMB Paris-Roubaix tubulars from Jos van Veldhoven today. I was a little perplexed by the valve stems. I don't think this is normal. These were apparently unused from a team, so I suspect they were intended for deep aero rims. Do the threaded portions unscrew or something? The top part is what I would expect the valve stems on quality tubulars to look like.

The silver coloured part is a valve extender

Cool! Tire comes prepared for the popular deep rims but those of us still using shallow rims don't have to live with a huge valve sticking out. I like!

I get that. I will remove the smooth extender and use only the threaded stem. What I don't get is why the base valve stem is externally threaded. It's certainly not needed on a tubular. I'm not used to seeing threaded valve stems on high quality tubular tires. This image is on the FMB website. It looks to me like a smooth valve stem and a not-too-deep rim.

Hey Skip, the FMB PRs I purchased 5 years ago also have this external threading so this isn't recent. I have an old set of Clements that also have this style stem, but other than that everything else is smooth. I wonder if they got a deal on valve stems from some supplier? When cross season starts again, some day, I'll check with the people who run FMBs and see if they do it on the cross tires as well.

All of my FMB PRs (4 pair) are threaded. All of my Dugast Pipistrellos (5 pair) are not threaded.

Thanks all. I guess I won't worry about it and let it chew up my pump's chuck washer...
