If It's an actual crack in the fork, not just a peel in the clear coat, I will eat my René Herse.

It's a 3Rensho. How many chances will you get to buy one?
Use your concern about the fork to negotiate a better price. Once it's yours and you determine it's just cracked clear coat, pat yourself on the back for your shrewd bargaining skill. If by some longshot the crown is actually cracked, use the money you saved to buy a nice chrome Tange fork.

Hi everyone... I did end up purchasing the bike at a discount given the concern with the fork but to my delight it was just the chrome! It’s filthy but in beautiful condition with full 7400 and original paint (and I think decals but still researching as I am new to Japanese bikes). I’ll definitely post photos after it is spruced up but here are a couple quick shots. I used advice from all on the thread and it worked out nicely so my thanks again!!

SCORE! But by "...it was just the chrome!" do you mean there was clearcoat over the chrome that was "cracked" or the chrome plating is "cracked"? Beautiful San Rensho, a tick newer than my own...I think you are gonna love the ride!

So.... I am not making any bike soup, but now that the bigger picture shows up we can see that the decals have been clear coated. None of those shots occurred during the discussion. Interesting that we all got to discussing possibilities about the chrome and cracks in it, when in fact we should have been discussing clear coat and the way it breaks down. I work with chrome plated golf clubs daily and I have seen cracks in the chrome from stress, and they almost always rust sooner or later. Smiles, MH

Some of y'all need to get your eyeglass prescription checked - just sayin'
Clearcoat over chrome is not uncommon. This same thing happened with the clearcoat over my Medici's crown; I simply chipped away the remaining clear and it's been fine. The clear on the chrome stays of the Somec was spidering, but it looked cool; I left it alone.
Lots of worry-warting over nothing here - and the early pics showed exactly what was going on. I knew scarlson wouldn't have to eat a Herse
