84 Nishiki International - tire fit

I'm looking at buying an 82 Nishiki International at my LBS. What's the biggest tire I can get in there? I don't mind changing out the brakes.

It's not a question of changing the brakes. Trial and error will tell you what will work. If the bike has 27 inch wheels, switching to 700c will help. In that case, you may need to switch brakes but quite likely will not.

I have and 82 Nishki Olympic 12, converted to 700c and longer reach brakes. it takes a conti gatorskin in 28 really easily

more of an issue if it is 27 inch rim is relative lack of 27 in tires available and that 27 inch tires did not come that big. Almost for sure it will take 27 1 1/4 but gets iffy at 27 1 3/8 and there wasnt much bigger IIRC

Agreed. The bike came with 27" wheels and tires when new. 27 x 1 1/4" tires are relatively easy to find and there's a couple 27 x 1 3/8" tires out there but there's nothing bigger. Converting to 700C wheels and tires is possible. My wild-ass guess is that the frame would allow 700 x 38C tires and nothing bigger. I spent time working in a shop in the 1980's and no one wanted anything larger than 27 x 1 1/4" or 700 x 32C back then.
