Rossin help
My friend just aquired a craigslist Rossin with a mishmash of parts on it. Its been repainted except for the fork. It seems like he may be able to rub off some of the paint to see whats underneath though. The bike is marked with a 56 stamp which we've assumed means 56cm and another stamp of 36SL. Can anyone give us a little info based on the serial number or geometry on what model this is or year. Also curious what original components may have been. I read through a few Rossin threads on here and seems like there's a few knowledgeable Rossin guys on here. Thanks

Any tubing stickers? Tough to see the bike at the resolution of the pictures. There are sharper guys than me at recognizing details on here but pictures would help. Definitely a Rossin/fork...has that beefier bottom bracket shell that was proprietary to them.
A closer set of pictures of the drive train, the head tube, rear drops, the upper side of the BB would be good. The seat stay cluster Is the front derailleur brazed on? What are the mish mash components? Is there pantographed Rossin on the stem? Seatpost diameter? Headest? Is there "R"s carved into the head tube lugs on the down/top tube? Are those internally routed brake cables? I am leaning toward 1985/86...closer look would help with either SL, SLX, etc... |
Sorry about resolution of pics. He sent by text and lost some quality from that. I have a couple more he sent and I'll ask a few more questions of him about particulars you mentioned.

He says the front derailleur is braze on.

Looking at the bottom bracket, I wonder if it might be a Ghibli? The older Rossin bikes(Record, etc.) Had a more conventional BB, with an R cutout in the bottom. Also the cables running through would make it mid-late 80s(I think).

Either way, SLX-level or higher. |
If I’m seeing it correctly in the first set of pics the BB shell has the Rossin logo.

Ghibli, or Not A Ghibli...
With the low resolution pics, who knows?
I will go out on a limb and note the "36SL" stamped in the BB shell likely suggests Columbus SL tubing. I don't have a clue what the "36' might indicate. (My Ghibli also has chrome socks, but "rippled tubing" and "SLX" stamped in the BB shell.) (Edit: Oh, and the pinched ears of the seat post binder tell me the seat post is too small.) |

The seat stay lugs are reminiscent of my Performance. |

Sounds like it may be late 80s. Any idea what correct components for that time frame might be. I'm guessing campy but which campy?

Here is a link to a 1988 Rossin Catalog. As you will see, each model had different component packages from which to choose, so choose as you will. but choose wisely?
Additional pics are appreciated, but they are of the components, and of little use in identification of the frame. Please take some of the frame? Is there an "X" after the "SL" stamped on the bottom bracket? It kind of looks like maybe, but then again, maybe not? You'll note in the catalog Rossin offered models with SL and Cromor tubesets. The SL, if it is only an "SL," would suggest it is one of those. The absence of "rippled" tubing, and the stamped "SL," would seem to rule out it being a Ghibli? |
