1985 Trek 560 modern restore

Hello all,

I recently picked up a 1985 Trek 560 Frame and wheelset and plan to do a build with it. Only issue is I canít seem to get a good tube diameter measurement (Iím assuming itís somewhere around 27 mm) to replace the front derailleur. I picked up a 2012 shimano sora group set and plan to use the rear derailleur and the shifters. If anyone can tell me what clamp on front derailleur i could get that would both fit the tubing on the seat tube, and is compatible with 2012 shimano sora 2x8 that would be amazing!
thanks In advance

The original front derailleur would have been a SunTour New Cyclone-S. If memory serves, it takes a 28.6mm band clamp.

28.6 does sound right. Any ideas for a front derailleur that is compatible with Shimano Sora ST R3300 and has a 28.6mm clamp?

If you're buying the full Sora component kit and you'll have a sore front derailleur you might consider one of the 28.6mm clamps to fit on braze-on front derailleur I think Shimano even makes 1

Assuming you mean the Sora 3300 groupset, and not the modern Sora R3000 - basically any FD from any of the STI equipped groupsets, from 7 speed to 10 speed will do; except for the Tiagra 4700, Sora R3000, Claris R2000- these three have different pull ratio for the FD.
However if you have a complete Sora 3300 groupset, I would stick with the FD3300 just for the sake of completeness:

I seem to be finding a lot of triple Front derailleurs but I am looking for a double. Are there any double front derailleurs compatible with The Sora 3300 shifters, and have a 28.6 mm clamp? I can get a braze on adapter if needed, but getting a clamped derailleur would be nice.

A braze-on adapter is better. The reason is that the clamp mars the paint. With the braze-on adapter you clamp it on once, and then you use the FD mounting bolt to do height adjustment from there on out.

If possible, I would prefer to keep a clamp on. The paint is already marred in that area from previous use. Just looking for a clamp on 28.6 double thatís compatible with my Sora 3300 shifters. Not familiar enough with cable pull ratios to know what FD I will need.

I think the Sora FD-3400 for 2x8 is the one you're looking for. Came in both 31.8 and 28.6. Looks like it may have been discontinued, so that might explain why you're having trouble finding one:
