1986 Dorado Sherpa Mountain Bike

Picked this ATB up for $30 in order to harvest the SR slingshot stem. I believe it's a 1986 model, & it's spec'd surprisingly nice. CroMo frame & fork, chain hanger, mid-fork rack mounts, & double eyelets front & back. Suntour XC Sport derailleurs, roller cam brakes (rear is mounted on the chainstay), & power ratchet thumbies, as well as Araya 7x 26 x 1.75 rims with Suzue sealed bearing hubs. While searching for info on the web, I came across this 1986 Dorado catalog that is for sale on fleabay. Here's the auction site link if anyone cares to have a look:

I have the road bike version of that. Same color and same gold decals. I believe they were sold via Costco for a very short time in the mid 80s, which would jive with the parts on your and mine. Your's looks like a great donor for a more pedigree'd frame as it's a nice collection of period parts on a super obscure brand frame. Mine seemed to ride nice enough and had very good clearances (I tested fitted 650bx42 tires and it was fine, or 700x38).

He shoots he scores! Yeah, $30 for this bike is better than $35 for its catalog. Thumbies, roller cams and the slingshot are like a 1986 MTB tri-fecta.

more web searches: Rocky Cycles, the entity behind Dorado, was Incorporated in Sunnyvale, CA from 1981-1987 before sliding into obscurity. The ebay catalog shows 3 mountain bikes & a couple of kids bikes, but no road bikes were featured. Apparently the Sherpa originally sold for $261. Not bad considering the quality components.

Here's my frameset. Nicely enough finished. Over/under bottle cages on the DT, I've got it in my pile to go to the co-op unless anyone in the PNW wants it.

Definitely the same color (catalog refers to it as Gun Metal Gray) & graphics. After I remove the tasty bits from the Sherpa, I'll be donating the frame to the local Co-op as well.
