Figured a new thread could start on this forum for the modernization builds where 10, 11, and 12sp drivetrains(or inevitably more cogs in the future) are paired to the C&V road frames we love.
Here are a couple to start.


1988 Schwinn Premis frame with Shimano 5800 105 drivetrain, innicycle headset, and 28mm Panaracer GK slick tires. The frame was destroyed when I got it- rust on every tube, cable guides busted, etc. Brazed on some new cable guides and had it powdercoated.




1989 Novara Trionfo frame with Shimano 105 5800 drivetrain, innicycle headset, and 25mm Conti GP5k TDF skinwall tires. One of my kids asked for her road bike to be painted so I took it to the powdercoater and snuck this frame along with it. We now have matching bikes which she is a good sport about.

1988/89 De Rosa Professional. Campagnolo Record 10V, Calipers are Titanium model, the rest I don't know, just 10 speed parts. Ambrosio Nemesis tubular with Vittoria G+, Miche post, Cinelli 1R stem, 64-40 bar, Brooks Swallow, with Look Keo. Oh and Wahoo Roam and Silca pump.

Very nice builds, guys. As a father of a teenage daughter I can appreciate the effort to secretly color match your frame to hers. Very cool.

Yes he does! He's only thirteen years old, and wearing a size 12 now. He has grown a whole bunch in the last 18 months.

This one was built up back in 2007-8 from a frame I bought on Ebay. I don't know the exact age. It's a Battaglin, built from Columbus MAX which makes it post-1987, and the cable routing at the BB suggests it predates brifters, because there's too much cable friction unless you run teflon liners around the cables. Repainted and built up with 2006 Chorus, then recently refitted with a medium cage Veloce rear derailleur to accomodate a 12-30 cassette. It was my 'go to' bike for at least a decade.


This one was bought with STIs, back in 1997, but the serial number dates the frame to 1992. Ritchey Road Logic, originally with full 7410 Dura Ace. The date codes on the crank and brakes date to 1996, so I guess the frame was hanging around the shop unsold for a while before they built it up. I rode it as an 8-speed till Fall of 2019, when I realized the 39x25 lowest gear was keeping me from using it. I bought a 7800 rear derailleur and STIs, as well as a 12-30 cassette, and kept the rest of it as is. Originally white, I had it repainted in 2007 by the guy who painted all Ritchey frames for a long time. It is the best shifting bike I have. The shifting is almost silent, with the only sound being the *click* from the STIs.

I like the substitution of the 7410 crank into the 6700 group. The new Shimano cranks are just so hard to pair with a steel frame, aesthetically.

I agree. I have the 6700 crankset that came with the other parts, but it just doesn't jive with a steel framed bike(in my opinion).

I used the 5703 crank (same ugly shape as the 6700) on the Colnago and Coppi above. The black color kind of helps it hide, but a more traditional crank with a 5-arm spider would probably look better.

A decade ago, this thread would not have been tolerated by most members of the forum. Indexed shifting was bad enough but brifters were considered even worse and if it was Shimano's STI, it was considered the equivalent of selling your soul to the devil. It would be nice to think that the forum at large, is becoming more tolerant, if not enlightened, but it's really just the constant shift in demographics

Two decades, at least. The original thread was started in '07, and apart from the occasional joke, comments were generally very supportive from day one.

Which led to me becoming a fan as well, at least for touring bikes. When I discovered 'Shimergo' as an easy and budget-friendly way in, I was on board.

First try was this 18-speed Austro-Daimler Inter 10:



Current favorite, albeit by a small margin, is this 15-speed Roy Thame:

of course I still have a more traditional 84 team miyata so I don't feel i am pushing the limit too far (bit of an embarrassment of riches to have two team miyata's)

If I limit this to frames built before brifters hit the market, which makes sense, I'm down to only 3 now. I guess some was the herd getting whittled down a bit, and a couple/few others got re-vintage-ized. I've had all 3 of these for at least a few years now, so they've gone through some changes over time.

I figure if I'm going modern-ish, go for the gusto, so they're all 1x, modern wheels, pinned flat pedals and interrupter levers all-around. Carbon cranks on 2/3. The oldest frame has the newest carbon crank.

The Kvale was originally silver, Chris repainted it for the original owner at some point in time.

The Columbine came with crappy rattle-can paint and non-original fork. John Murphy built me an "original" fork, and Jack/Franklin Frames did the respray.

The 'nooch has one of Brian Baylis' last paint jobs, and the frame had been modded a few times by Mark for the two previous owners. I installed the fenders for Peter Weigle's French Fender Day in 2019, but they came off pretty quickly afterwards.
