Just to follow up on this post(pun sorta intended).
I bought the AC post last Sunday, with bike attached. It looks solid, so I will leave it alone. I didn't ask the owner how long he's been riding it with that seatpost. But he's had the bike since 86, and I'm sure it's been ridden a bunch.
Thanks for all the help..

I have on on my 85 Fisher Comp that I put on when I built out the frameset in 86. Lots of hard miles including serious downhill bombing and it’s still going strong.

This isn't the same bike(fork decals missing), but it has a 7400 post. Your photo might have a 7410 post(no flutes)?

I've got an American Classic seatpost on my Battaglin, because it was the only good quality 27.4mm post I could find. I've got somewhere between 5,000 and 10,000 miles on it, for most of which I weighed >210 lbs. Nothing ever broke, but it did come loose once. I think maybe the angle-setting screw backed out a bit somehow, and that allowed play in the main clamping bolt, and it worked loose. It's gone thousands of miles since.
