Now I have to be careful not to get it too tight.
Hmmm, I wonder if carbon fiber assembly paste would work…

It might help on the rails but the bolt will still not be getting tight enough.

Once I stopped the binding it was all good.

You can get a single use tube at Auto zone or Oreily's for a couple of $$.

I was actually thinking of applying it between the “cradle” and clamp, since it’s meant to prevent slipping between parts. Even though neither part will be carbon, I’m hoping the grit in the assembly paste will provide enough friction between the two alloy parts.

So the pivoting/tilting surfaces?

If so, that may not hurt but the problem will not be solved until the bolt starts doing its full job again, you gotta resolve the root cause.

It may help but will likely slip under more pressure again anyway.

The other part of the equation is a good wrench to lean in on the bolt with and won't slip or gack the flats.

Ah, I see what you’re talking about now. The threads on both bolt and mating rectangular “nut” are clean (no rust, etc.) and greased, not binding, so I’ll try the carbon assembly paste and see if it holds.

Okay, the '79 Mercian Campionissimo is built after a long evening at it! Now the debate begins, whether I should ride it or the '54 Carlton Super Python for the short course? Any thoughts?

I think we need to see the matching jersey to properly decide! So far it is a toss up for me.

The Carlton for sure. However, you need to run the cables BEHIND the bars on both bikes first.

in the past I’ve put a drop of lube on the bolt (theorizing that it will help seat the bolt in as far as possible) and applied a little rubber cement, used for patching inner tubes. In one case I may have even lightly scored the seat of the cradle 3-4 times with a small file.

Actually I definitely don't. If you look through the photo galleries from the 1950s-60s in England shown on the Classic Lightweights website, or in any of the dozens of original issues of Cycling and The Bicycle or the period bicycle maintenance manuals I own, you'll see it was very common to run them in front of the bars.

Lighthouse and back? The Carlton gearing is more than adequate. Plus it's mucho cooler. +1 for the period correct cable routing.

Anyone has info on the sunset ride on Friday? Is it an ad hoc ride? Where does it start, the web site has suggested starting time from 17:30-21:00.
Thanks

One more random post to get to 10 - I'll be working at the Cayucos first rest top on Saturday from 7-10 am. Anyone from BF signed up to work at some of the stops?

Wow, Tuscany too, can't imagine going overseas for one, I can barely, not really justify doing this one on the same coast as me.

it’s interesting, in the mid seventies I would route in front of the bars. I thought it kept the cockpit clean. I only changed because for a while I was using a handlebar bag. I still have a bag but seldom use it. I got used to seeing my bike(s) with the cables behind and with a twist of twine to keep them organized. Old habits die hard .

The forecast I saw for Paso Robles lists a high of 80 degrees with 12 mph winds. I definitely want to try to stay hydrated for that late afternoon push over Cypress during the peak temp time.

Since I'm only doing the short Piedres Blancas route, I swapped the more modern compact crank for a more OE correct Sugino Mighty crankset with 53/42 rings. Original equipment was probably 151 BCD with a bigger inside ring. Pedals are now OE correct KKT Pro Ace. I can't remember where I got them, but the quills on both sides had severe road rash caused by a previous owner & I hack-sawed the quills off decades ago to make redneck track pedals. With high temps on the 60s on the coast, I may still ditch the water bottle cage on the seat tube and move the pump to clean up the appearance.

I've secured a room in San Simeon for Friday night so I should make it to the Saturday ride from the bike shop. We'll be staying in Cambria at one of the places on Moonstone Beach Drive Saturday and Sunday.

We take them out on ARBT fairly frequently as of course the riding is easy, they seem to attract a lot of appreciation.
