Merziac, do you still have all these??? Or has the Merz/Strawberry tack encouraged you to thin the herd? I've only ever seen pics of the Merz's, Strawberries, and the lone Paramount.

Since I posted on this thread, I have acquired two bike frames of which one satisfies my previous list. Although it hasn't been ridden yet, and it has its flaws it works. I like it aesthetically at the moment.
1971 Bianchi, unknown model if any. Just another excuse to post pics.

What is cool for me is the integrated HS.

Yep, still have all these and too many more.

Plenty not listed here and many languishing as frame only/as found bike, etc.

I am very much guilty of "shiny new object" syndrome and most of the recent ones have been grail finds so they have gotten immediate attention and been sorted out.

I added several this last year as the first full year of retirement, 40's women's Paramount, 94 MB-1, 70's chrome Ritchey, 94 Big S Stumpy and the recent Strawberry.

The big silver Merz got new wheels and a full scrub and polish for Bob Freemans show and the green, full on original Merz touring got the same for Eroica so it was a far more productive year than usual for me.

4 of the Paramount's have been sprinkled throughout and only 2 of 4/5 the Strawberries have been seen recently.

I have added way too many since I started this and probably have enough to keep me busy the rest of my life.

I already shared what I think are my five favorite bikes that I currently have in the garage, but I do have a kind of mental list of what I’d like to have. The criteria here are arbitrary. They have to be nice enough to displace something I already have, because the garage is full. They also have to be something I think I might be able to find within the price range I’d be willing to spend. The De Rosa and Masi I posted earlier didn’t meet this second criteria before I found them cheaper than I expected. So, something like a really nice Hetchins that I would jump at if I found it for the right price isn’t on the list because it’s not something I’m “looking for.”

Finally, my wish list:

Peugeot PX-10 — These are common enough that I could probably go on eBay and buy one tonight. I’m holding out for the right combination of fit, price, and condition coming along when I have cash on hand and time to work on it. I like French bikes, and this is an iconic model, so I’d like to try it. Normally, I like to modernize the components on my vintage frames, but I’d like one with all classic French components, and a PX-10 would be perfect for that.

Cinelli Supercorsa — I had one of these pass through my garage. I bought my De Rosa as part of a package that included a Supercoorsa frame that I had agreed to resell to @Spaghetti Legs before I saw it. I was immediately smitten with the frame after seeing it and tried to talk Spaghetti Legs into backing out of our deal. Alas, I couldn’t convince him not to pass it up, so I shipped it off to him with a tear 8n my eye. One day I’ll get one.

Sarroni red Colnago — I don’t know if I care what model. I love this color, and it has a tight association with Colnago. I have a nice-riding Colnago that I could have painted, but the color and decals I imagine don’t properly go with the model I have (a 1997 C97).

I was going for five, but the more I think about it, the more I realize that the others I can think of I just kind of passing interests that I might not even act on if I came across at a good price. So, there you go. Maybe my N+1 drive is weakening as I approach D-1.
This may be a bit narcissistic of me, but I sometimes get a kick out of reading things that I posted long enough ago that I forgot about it. From this list of "bikes I'd like to have" from less than a year and a half ago, I have since come to check a few boxes as highlighted above.

Peugeot PX-10 -- Nailed it! And I'm happy to say, I love the ride of this. It lives up to its reputation.

Sarroni red Colnago -- Would you believe a Sarroni red Pinarello? I know, it doesn't have quite the same historic connection, but it's really the color that I was after, and I love this one.

something like a really nice Hetchins -- OK, that was a big ask, and as I said above not something I even intended to seek out, but for not seeking it out, I think the Mercian Vincitore I got last month is kind of a poor man's Hetchins. At least, I will be a poor man after I pay to have it painted.

Now if I can just talk @Spaghetti Legs into selling me that blue Supercorsa....

I should stop making mental lists like this.

Ha. I was typing out my list and it looks just like this. This year, I sold my Ritchey, bought a Merz, rode my Cinelli (below) and turned down a Masi.

I like to have specific categories of bikes: a touring bike (Haral, below) for riding around town, a classic for staring (Cinelli, below), and a long-distance bike for weekend exercise (Kirk, below, ten years vintage).

I'll always want a Peter Johnson. My "goal bikes" are a custom 70s / early 80s Eisentraut, a nice Bob Jackson / Stan Pike / English bike and a Weigle.

We think alike! I also would not turn down what appears to be the only year for a full Reynold 853 Lemond to come with a steel fork.

In regards to important Italian builders, don't forget Giuseppe Pela and Giovanni Losa. Both built little to nothing under their own name, but many of the greats rode their frames with other decals. Among the many pros that Pela built for were Merckxand Anquetil.

I hear you well! As a matter-of-fact, I would rather have a good steel fork than carbon. Especially old carbon that has been thoroughly used. That's why I chose the '97 B.A. over the '99. I'm quirky, though..., I prefer Kinesis aluminum, so that's what I'd probably pop on the B.A.

I'm with Road Fan, I'd have to include a tandem. The Santana Arriva I bought in 1985 caused me to smile for 30 + years.
Oh yeah, some of those single bikes are fine too.

Also, the Merz/Strawberry tack has been from the start, been a fan since I was in HS and met Jim early on.

It just took a little longer although I found 3 of the Merz's fairly quickly the Starwberry's took a little longer and were harder to nail down closer to my size.

Now there are more derivatives and I have some of them now too so I have most of what I want/need and then some.

I looked for "A" Miyata 1000 and came out with a 1990 Miyata 1000LT- and I don't think I could have asked for a better year- but I do like the Teal 91s.

I always think I'd like something like a Herse or Singer- but truth be told- I'd want to build it up all modern-y instead of letting it be it's own awesome self- so I could never have a legit antique classic.

Up until a few years ago, I really wanted a Rivendell A. Homer Hilsen- with cantis. I guess I'd take one if it popped up, I just don't feel like chasing after it anymore.

If I were to have a custom made- Ellis would be my first choice. Of course, I totally forgot about Weigle until seeing Paul's beauties. Or a chrome plated, fillet brazed Ebisu. Or a Toei... Maybe someday if the money drops into my lap...
I just saw a dead ringer for your red 720 frame on Ebay this evening!

Thanks for the heads up!!!

A few days ago I was just talking about how I've seen my pix end up on ads for stuff- so then I was worried that someone was using my pix to scam someone-

No- that's a totally different 21" 1985 Trek 720. But thank you very much for letting me know!

Thanks! Dead ringer except for the paint - your paint is in far better condition. My 1982 (no canti posts!) also has spotty paint, but I don't know yet if I want to fix it. I'm gonna fender it to help protect the frame when I go out on the "Old Folks Country Roads" rides. It's alignment is pretty good but I'm sure not up to the standards of our frame experts -I wish Gugie lived closer! Tires are 700 x 30 c. Right now the hardest part of the resto is to get the rear dropouts aligned so the brake shoes don't drag. Yes, I have the H-tools, but I think I just haven't found the correct setup. I may have to mill the wheel axle slots a little as well. Other issues: rear mech is an early Suntour blue-line with a medium cage which is ok and works well, and a Huret Challenger front mech which worked well on the Trek 610 but is sticky on the 720 - something is torqued just a touch too tight!. Or maybe I just need new cables and should stop reusing the old ones spiralled up in my wire box. It's hard to be a cheapskate! I'm friction shifting it, which is really no problem. It has an ARIS freewheel which has nice teeth, and they grab the chain very readily.

Not in order. The key word is “classics”

1 DeRosa from the early 70s, made by Ugo his own self.
2 Masi from the mid 60s..Paint and letter it as a Peugeot with the proper French parts, just like Eddy’s…
3 Cinelli SC from the late 60s…
4 Alex Singer from the late 80s…both Ernest and Olivier Csuka would have a hand in the building at that time..
5 Prestige Peugeot 1979…The last year for centerpull brakes in the pro peloton on a major team’s bikes. Built by the same guy (Raoul Jean D’Heure) who built the frames for Thevenet, Kuiper, Simon, Anderson, etc….with all of the proper equipment with the titanium bits as possible…

Alright imma join the fun. Tbf, I have only been in the cycling/wrenching game for about 1.5 y, but it has developed into a passion (both riding and mechanics).

1) Puch (Steyr-Daimler) Vent Noir. (This bike in particular is a beauty I would love to own/ride/build up)
2) Cinelli
3) Bianchi
4) Koga Miyata
5)... no idea.

I have inherited a Colnago Master, which unfortunately is too small for me and will be sold off.

My "top-5" I most desire?! It is to laugh.
This is the shortest list I can come up with (in no particular order):

Top-5 most-desirable British frames that will probably remain unobtainable:
  • Alpex built by Jack Denny, with curved seat-tube & curly chain-stays
  • Elswick Vampire Convincable (were any made beyond the prototype?)
  • Norris Lockley/Bespoke of Settle - the model with the cut seat-tube, a bit like a "Flying Gate" (can't recall the name)
  • Freddy Grubb cross-frame
  • Ephrgrave with the lugs shaped like swallows or ivy leaves
Top-5 most-desirable Britishframes that I will probably eventually get:
  • Ephgrave - preferably an early #1 Super
  • Hetchin's Hellenic
  • Gillott Taper-Tube
  • H.R. Morris - something with elaborate lug-work
  • Rensch Paris Galibier
Top most-desirable Italian frames that will probably remain unobtainable:
  • Lino Messori "Forata"
  • Bugatti space-frame built by Marco Bertazzoni
  • something that Pelà built
Top-5 most-desirable Italian frames that I will probably eventually get:
  • Pogliaghi
  • Guerciotti
  • Giame
  • Paratella
  • Drali
    (all pre-1980s)
Top-5 most-desirable French frames that will probably remain unobtainable:
  • Camille Daudon model "10T"
  • Caminade Caminargent
  • Nicola Barra alloy cross-frame
  • anything built by Anicet Cattanéo
  • Herse mixte
Top most-desirable Japanese frames
  • Nagasawa - pre-1980 track frame
  • Toei - pre-1980 randonneur
Top most-desirable otherframes
  • pre-1860 laufmaschine
  • Dursley Pedersen
  • Ivor Johnson "truss-frame"
  • Simplex pastoorfiets
This list would've been a lot easier if you had asked for our "top-30 most desirable..." 😏

Having gone through at least 2 dozen bikes, I'd have to say the nicest riding vintage bikes were a De Rosa Professional, my current Tommasini Comp, and an early 80s Ciocc. Had a 1984 Bianchi Specialissima, but sold it since it wasn't my size and honestly didn't ride that well. I will say that my oldish (90s) Ritchey Road Logic probably rode nicer than any vintage Italian bike I had.

"Best" is very opinion specific-

bikes I own that are sought after -

Confente 1976
Colnago '68 through '73
Masi Gran Criterium- '70-'75
Cinelli Super Corsa '72

many others but not in the highly sought after category.

And I'm painting the dozens of paint issues including real rust on the Pro Miyata I picked up last summer with custom mixed fingernail polish. The bike is a step down from the Team Miyata but with ovalized and semi-aero blades and seatstays. (Just one WB, no pump peg so just like the Fuji Pro I raced long ago and loved so the same clamp-on extras.) Bike spent real time outdoors. Lots of rust. Parts were close to trash but it seems everything important on the frame is basically OK. (Seatpost pin pulled out of threads when I adjust the seat after my first ride and is now an Ace Hardware bolt.) I'd have to spend a lot of money to make this bike look beautiful or even respectable. But the ride! Takes a 155 stem to fit me but I've got two so NBD. The rest of the fit - as right on as you can get. Handling - pure race and perfect. Stiff. All effort goes forward! Always feels like I could have ridden that rough road or off camber corner faster. The bike simply takes me places. Often faster than these legs really want to go.

(And pics, if they ever happen, will be from a distance!)
