Worth reviving?
Hi, Folks....brand new to biking, and looking for a little help.
I've just "inherited" a bike, I'm assuming form the early 70's maybe? I'ts in pretty decent shape, but I want to know if it's a good quality bike worth bringing back to life or if it was a garden variety cheaper model, and that I should just spring for a new one. The only brand name I see is "HOSTELER" Tag says "Made In France" derailleuer says "SACHS HURET" Center pull brakes say "Weinmann 750" and "Vainqueur 999" That's about all I can find on it..........any thoughts? Thank you! Cole |
In the very early 1970s, Gitane had a entry level touring model called the Hosteller. The name was changed to the Alpine for the US market. It was very much like the Peugeot UE8/UE18 (i.e. hi-tensile tubing, cottered crankset, Simplex derailleurs, MAFAC Racer brakes, racks, lighting system, fenders).
I've never heard of a Hosteler brand. it could be early 1970s, as you suggest. The Weinmann 750 brakes were common throught the 1970s and into the early 1980s. However, the Sach-Huret derailleurs suggest mid-1980s, if they are original. Some pics and additional info (tubing decals, crankset and wheel description) may help. |
