It looks like the rain won’t hit till late Saturday. I’m planning on being there with a bike I haven’t brought before…. Windsor or Paramount. It’ll probably be a Saturday morning decision.

I don't know what it is about first Saturdays this year, but once again, life is getting in the way of important stuff, like riding on the Peninsula with good people.

I will be at the Giro d'Vino on Sunday, though. For those of you not familiar with the GdV, it is a winery crawl (at least a dozen wineries, and tasting fees are waived for those who paid the entry fee) cleverly disguised as a 40ish-mile bike ride circumnavigating Lodi. You literally ride completely around Lodi without ever actually entering the town. If you buy anything, the organizers haul your loot back to the start/finish for you to pick up after you've staggered back in. It's about as pancake-flat as riding gets - the climbing is limited to two overpasses over Highway 99. Alpe d'Huez or Mont Ventoux they ain't.

When I was a kid/teenager growing up in Livermore, Lodi was a subject of some derision (thanks largely but not exclusively to Creedence Clearwater's immortal tune), and its reputation for wine began and ended with jug wine made with the infamous Okay Tokay grape. That may or may not have been accurate then, but it certainly is not accurate now. There are a bunch of wineries surrounding Lodi now, and most of them make some darn fine vino.

I think I've brought every bike I own that's made of metal. I may throw tradition to the wind and ride the Bianchi - sure, it's CF and has brifters, but it's 16 years old!!! Doesn't that make it "vintage"? And the last time I took it to the LBS, the wrench said it was "a really classic Italian bike".

Or maybe the Lotus Supreme. I'll figure it out tomorrow morning, I guess!!!

Nice bike. They are doing controlled burns in Wilder at the moment, but when they are done, that bike looks ideally suited.

Everybody who has an Italian frame and does their own work has had this experience. I'd guess that the majority (and maybe a large majority) of us have had it more than once. We all know better. It still happens every now and again.

I use blue LocTite, tighten the fixed cup until it screams for mercy, and then tighten it a little more. That usually works. Usually.

I've probably never ridden any of mine far or hard enough.

That said, I don't believe there is such a thing as "LocTite" other than red and it fails often enough.

All the others are oxymorons at best, I've never had any of them stop me from getting anything apart or hold as prescribed either.

I use super glue and vary the amount and prep according to the application now days, it has never failed.

LocTite bottles/tubes are all red. It's what's inside that varies in color, and the label says if it is "Blue 242" or "Red 271." My exhaustive interwebs research (about ten seconds worth) says the red LocTite requires heating to 500* F. to undo the bond, while blue LocTite only requires a wrench and some grunting. I can vouch for the claim regarding blue. I cannot verify the claim regarding red, but it is line with what I have heard before from sources long since forgotten.

I think that is correct. Love the idea of SuperGlue also! Maybe we are confusing Loctite with Permatex brands? See images. I use Red Permatex for securing the flywheel screw pins I install to lock the ring gear to the flywheels I make (gsracingclutches.com). Blue for everything else. The bottom bracket should, in my opinion for my bike anyway, have had the Blue version of either brand, that being of medium strength.

I've been an ASE and FOMOCO Senior Master Technician as well as a mech/tech all my life.

Fixed a lot of auto's, MC's and bikes at work, on the road, the dragstrip and everywhere in between.

If I'm going to use any LocTite, I'm going to make sure it "adheres" to the premise that its not coming loose no matter what, I've never had to use any heat to undo it.

Before this exchange, I had never noticed the needing to heat to unscrew a bolt/screw etc in order to loosen. Here is a quote pulled from the Loctite website.

"PERMANENT FIX: Permanent seal prevents tampering and is only removable once cured by heating parts up to 500°F (260°C)"

I use is because it helps prevent loosening under high heat conditions. Me...still learning stuff. Thanks guys.

Also keep in mind that all the compounds require and rely on near laboratory conditions for the purported effectiveness.

Application and operating temperature, perfectly clean threads, no oil, moisture, residue of any kind on or in any of the threads and strict adherence to torque specs.

And yet still as noted above, the Italian cup and many other may still go rogue at anytime despite our best efforts.

Still have never needed the hot wrench for any fastener that was only being held with threadlocker, nothing truly "Permanent" with 10's of 1000's of nuts and bolts IME.

Same here, too much of a baby to take my steel valuables out in the rain, the clean up is a horror to my sensitivities!
