Poor Man’s Ultrasonic Cleaner
So…. I needed to clean up some old Campy crank bolts and got sick of scrubbing and swirling the bolts around in a cup. So, I came up with this…. And it’s working! The bolts are shining like new. I’m pretty excited about my new poor man’s ultrasonic cleaner.
Items Needed:
Small glass jar
Fish tank aerator
iPad box (this item is not necessary)
Check it out!

what solvent are you using?
i have a media tumbler i used to use to clean brass (to hand load ammunition)
i’m curious how this would work with the same crushed walnut shell media i used on the brass
hmmm. winters and long days indoors are just around the corner so i’ll find out soon 😊

I was so proud of myself last night, I just had to post my “creation!” I was using a cleaner called Krud Kutter, which I like for non-anodized metals on the bike. The air pump is just a run of the mill Petco unit that runs my 30 gallon tropical tank. It is marked IMAG-AP1 on the bottom.
Chainring bolts are now fresh and ready to put back into service.

I bought a Harbor Freight ultrasonic cleaner 6 or 7 years ago, used it half a dozen times, and shelved it. It basically just warmed up the water and presoaked components. I then still cleaned the components like I usually would after a round or two in the cleaner.
Cool that an even more basic approach is working for you.

Hi
I don't want to be funny but what does a fish tank aerator do in the process with the glass jar?
I cannot see the connection there.
Thanks

I saw another version using an orbital palm sander. A lot of them have Velcro to attach the sand paper, so you just put some peel and stick Velcro on your jar to fasten it to the sander.
