OMG! Another Trek Thread - The '84 720 Project

So I have had this 1984 720 for a while now. I bought it when I was riding my Cannondale alot and I figured I needed a steel touring steed also. Then life happened and I didn't get to it. For an embarrasingly long time. Now is the time to make it ridable..

Here is a pick of when I received it. It's got a hodgpodge of replacement parts that aren't bad but probably won't be used. While I will probably ride it around the neighborhood also, I really do want to build it so I can tour on it if I want.

1984 Trek 720 as purchased.

Here is some before pics on the paint. I purchased a new camera app so I could change the focus on close stuff. I am still learning it but it works much better than the iphone app. but of course... some of the pics I had showing the grime under the cables are gone... ugh.

Frame stripped

I widened the spacing to 130 and made sure it was aligned. I wish I had the Park frame tool so I could check the alignment to the BB. I will probably make one someday.

I think this was from shipping.

Here is the frame work I did. It is in nice enough shape that it will get a cleaning, polish and waxing. I don't really do to much touch up on paint, this one is pretty nice and I can't match anything. Also the bumps and scratches are a part of its history for me so I tend to leave them alone. The paint was really grungy in places, especially under the brake cable but it all came out nicely with a fine cut cleaner and polish. I am a little confused by the tube ripples at the front derailuer mount point. I have never seen that before.

I wanted large tires. After riding my 710 with 650b's around I decided I wanted something bigger than the 700x32 I was using on the C-dale. I'm sure 38's would look better on the 720 but I will give 42's a try and decide if they are a problem. As Riddle as pointed out, the Treks give you more room in the rear than in the front. But everything has 2mm or more of clearance so I will live with it, and just not worry about fenders. There is always the option of building a fork to accomodate the front better and have a woodys fender made to go over the brake bridge.

While I know the headset had been factory faced I went ahed and faced the Headtube, cleaned the fork threads and made sure everthing was nice and smooth.
