Treks: ‘82 510 vs. ‘8? 400(original)

my Gunnar cracked today. Hopefully it’ll be replaced under the lifetime frame warranty.

might pick up one of these Treks to ride while I wait.
I’m partial to the 400. Because of the components. And it’s a 30 minute drive away. Not 2.5 hours.
the 400 in the '89 catalog: https://www.vintage-trek.com/images/t...Trek89_400.jpg -- the pic below does not show aero brake levers though. the seller is claiming NOS.

Any recommendations? I think the 510 might be better tubes.

here’s the Gunnar cracked….

I had a circa 1990 RockHopper fail the same way….

Wait, you spend time in C and V and you don’t have a spare bike or two or three?

I’d get the 400 and not deal with the longer drive

i got a '76 Schwinn Super Le Tour set up with Albatross bars
i got a '84 Miyata 1000 set up with some North bars and a 2 speed kick back hub
then my fully rigid '89 Bichachi trail bike. and my second circa '90 RockHopper set up with fenders and rack and Jones bars for touring and general grocery getting. and i'm trying to sell my '84 TREK 420 which is too small.....
and somebody just gave me a HardRock, which I'm offer up to my son or future son-in-law as a beater bike. so i guess i got lots of options....

we chatted recently about a Fuji? I think? -- I'm after a 60cm. My TREK 420 is like a 56 or 57cm (whatever I said in the ad). My Gunnar has got a slopped top tube, but it's probably in the 58~60cm range.

I like the 510 but it is missing too much stuff. So given a choice between these two, I'm getting the 400. NOS? Nope. Prices seem high to me.

The 400 could be an 88, but even then, should still have aero brake levers, looks stock otherwise. Price isn’t too bad, I paid 250 for this one, found it rotting in a Texas shed, and definitely not ready to ride.
