Very sorry to hear this.
Some years ago he sold me a Le Champion that he had beautifully restored.
He was a pleasure to deal with and a perfect gentleman.
This is one of the pics he had taken to show me the bike.

Sorry to read this, and hope his family is alright.

We PM'd a while back and I can only echo the sentiments of others. A genuinely nice guy.

thinktubes 11-05-21 07:17 AM

Darn. He definitely was skilled and craved out a corner here. Lots of positive contributions.

RIP Scott.

satbuilder 11-05-21 01:20 PM

I hadn't heard from Scott in quite some time. In 2019, we had gone on vacation up to the Cape. and unfortunately, Scott's schedule didn't permit a meet.

He was a tremendous talent and he will certainly be missed. Great guy to deal with.

Sad to know he's gone. RIP Scott

Sad to hear of his passing...I always enjoyed his posts and his wit.

Sad news. Lots of loses recently.

For some reason I thought that this was a rootboy quote but it was Jim Muller another BF member I haven't seen in a long time...

Thinning out the herd... :(

When I joined this forum it was for two reasons: first was that whenever I put a question to google, nine out of ten times I ended up here. The other was that my visits were always longer than planned because of the high quality of the posts by the regular members. Rootboy was one of those.

I had noticed his absence, and was hoping for another reason than this one. RIP, Rootboy.

squirtdad 11-05-21 04:48 PM

He is missed, Hope his family is coping, a loss of a person we know to be a great person is never easy for those closest.

this also reminds me of what a family we have in C&V.

I often wonder when people stop posting, mostly it is because of other things, this post was appreciated

Jim and his wife are regulars in the https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...-improved.html thread on their tandem.
Sorry to see rootboy has passed. RIP

Another good man done gone a full go’round….😢

I had been thinking about him of late, wondered why he hadn’t posted here. Always enjoyed his contributions, cannot remember him saying anything cross or out of line.

RIP Rootboy🙏

It's all good. I bought them. Shut up and take my money indeed!

This is hard news to hear. I thought he had just drifted away like so many. Scott and I corresponded often and then COVID and life and we just lost touch. I remember his kindness, his skill at many things and his orange Team Champion. He will be sorely missed not just for his contributions here but I am sure by the many others he must have touched in his life.

This news came as a shock to me. I am truly so sorry we have lost such a lovely man from our community. Scott and I exchanged a lot of messages, and every single one of them was filled with camaraderie and ideas. I, too, have fallen away or just gotten a bit busy, but learning about the loss of Scott really makes for a sad day. I join the many here who treasured all of his widely varied inputs.

Thank you for posting this news.

This is sad news.

I sent him a few notes last spring about fly fishing without a response.

Scott was an immensely talented fly tier and routinely sent me "care" packages. He wanted me to test his designs on the various warm water species here in Minnesota and the greater Midwest. He was also adept at dry flies that were deadly on our annual Montana visits.

He usually refused any money for his work, so I had to send some against his wishes.

I'll take some pics of his handiwork when I get a moment. I actually have three of his creations framed in my fly rod building shop in the basement. Scott knew that I was spending a great deal of time on building various types of fly rods including bamboo and he had exceptional craft skills.

One of my bamboo fly rods was given the name a "Scott" special, as he had a great deal of input. It was designed to catch stripers/steelhead and we dreamed a little about a visit to his area when I retire next year.

In addition, he created custom bar end plugs for many of my bikes. He was incredibly accurate with his designs and they had a very high percentage of artistic value. Many people noticed them when I would be out and about on a ride or at the local shop.

Truly an exceptional person. I'll miss him.

Perhaps some of you with memories of Scott or who have any of Scott's other creations could share them here.

Those are lovely and I'm certain they are quite effective.

Thanks for posting.

Scott was the really first BF'r to communicate with me on a personal level. I really appreciated him and who he was. His talents were many, as noted already. Although he produced a fair number of tire savers that he sold to many BF'rs and through another business, he was always looking for something that was needed but no longer available. I still have a supply of tire savers from the '70's so didn't buy them but I did get a handle for one bike.

When it didn't quite meet my expectations, he quickly responded.

RIP Scott.

Very sad news. I was, for some reason, thinking just a day or two ago that I hadn't seen him around here for a while, but hoped for the best. He is truly missed. Ride on Rootboy, wherever you are up there.

Cougrrcj 11-06-21 07:17 PM

Sad news indeed!
My bikes all wear vintage TireSavers that were sold through Bike Warehouse back-in-the-day. I had replaced worn out scraper wire with repurposed broken stainless spoke sections when I saw that he was selling his own version of the vintage tire savers...

Leathercrafting and custom bag making - I wouldn't even attempt such a thing. He was truly talented.

Tailwinds and fair skies, Scott!

I’m so glad you posted a picture of the bike handle Scott made. He contacted me after I posted a picture of my Motobecane with a handle my son got for me in France and asked for some measurements. I’m happy to see his beautiful handy work.

Sir_Name 11-07-21 12:51 PM

Such sad news. An exceptional man indeed. I have a pair of his leather Campagnolo replacement hoods on one bike. I was riding it just the other day and was thinking how grateful I am to have had the opportunity to have him provide them. He was out of the production items when I got in touch, but was gracious enough to offer a set of his late prototypes. They’re fantastic. I also grabbed tire savers and we traded Campagnolo brake shoes of different eras to get things “just so.” A pleasure to deal with always. Ride In Peace, Scott. Perhaps we’ll meet again.

Thank you, obrentharris , for this thread! I had noted Scott's silence but hadn't thought much of it. I exchanged many pm's and emails withScott over the years, usually him giving me good advice about metalworking, and in exchange I gave him bad advice about leather.
I'm sorry i never actually met him. RIP.

Drillium Dude 11-07-21 10:22 PM

Damn. Another member with whom I corresponded regularly off-forum has passed on to his reward. I knew he had lots of other hobbies/interests, so when he dropped off the forum, I figured he was deep into one of those; he wasn't getting a lot of riding in when I last talked to him (back issues).

As others have noted, Scott was a talented man with imagination and skills. A few examples of his works:

Sad news and tough to hear. He sent me a tool roll he made, seems like 10 years ago. I still use it.

I'm really sorry to hear this news as well. rootboy was quite active on this forum when I first joined over a decade ago. He was always extremely kind, generous, knowledgeable, and creative. I especially appreciated his DIY projects such as his machined metalwork and leathercraft shown above, not to mention his beautiful and elegant bikes, particularly the lavender Motobecane. Ride In Peace, Scott!
