What tape and color would you recommend?

I believe this is the original tape on my 88 Gran Turismo. Should I try
and clean it up or put something new on it. The bike had been ridden just a few
times and had been hanging in a garage for years

Try to match the silver of the head tube and graphics.

I have a univega specialissima in the same colour, and my preference would be to match the tan saddle and lever hoods. A reasonable choice might be Brooks honey (microfiber or leather). The tiny punched holes provide a nice bit of contrast and texture. Place the merlot in the bottle cage.

$30 for bar tape?

Most colors will look good with burgundy.

I just put this in silver on my wife's bike. It comes in other colors. https://www.ebay.com/itm/25506808395...8AAOSw4AdfH~67

I find burgundy bikes tend to look good with yellow bar tape. I would aim for something warmer with some orange in it — more mango or melon than yellow. That way, you'll pick up the warmer red tones in the saddle.

Another VOTE here for the HONEY color Fizik classic bar tape! I think you'll find it hard to better that Honey colored tape with your particular UNIVEGA Gran Turismo's classic looking rich & deep, understated, beautiful factory paint. Silver would look too cheap for such a nice bike, although it would work okay. My opinion is that on your bike with that color, it would be best to have something that is in a color that blends-matches with the color of the hoods and color of the seat. Doing that and selecting "HONEY" also allows the lugs, decals, the chainrings, wheels and stem, etc to "pop" on their own........silver would detract from that "pop", although it would blend-match with the silver color items, the silver bar tape wouldn't enhance the look of the other silver items and the silver bar tape would not enhance the factory paint or the seat & hoods look........The Silver bar tape would provide absolutely no "pop" visually to the entire bike the way it should. With silver bar tape, your eye would immediately focus on the silver bar tape which although I'm sure would be a quality-decent looking Silver bar tape, but my opinion is that it would have the viewer wondering why on such an otherwise very classic looking bicycle that someone went with silver as you already have great looking silver components and parts of decal and the silver bar tape wouldn't look as good as those silver components that you already have there, so thus it would be the weakest link as far as looks, although it might be acceptable on a gaudy looking, pastel, neon, fluorescent 1987-1991 era bicycle. You cannot go wrong with HONEY as that color would keep your great looking bike looking like the beautiful timeless classic that it is. That is just this idiot's opinion. Dummies can tell you to go this way or that way. You asked what people thought, so you get plenty of suggestions. What you like is the only one that matters!

Fizik usually costs closer to $20, but for whatever reason, the honey color is more expensive. Personally, I think Fizik (2mm classic) is worth it, because it looks great for eons, feels comfortable (even without gloves), is a pleasure to wrap, and lasts a lot longer than anything else I've ever used. ymmv.

The tape goes well with the bike as-is, IMO. It helps that the cables match. I don't like plastic tape, but if it's in good shape and you do, keep it.

Here's another alternative: https://www.ebay.com/itm/282613402038

I think a honey colored tape would go because of the tan hoods and side walls of the tires. The seat looks like a much darker than the honey tape shade to me. Having everything match won’t happen with that seat but to me it isn’t important to have everything match.

That tape looks quite a lot like the stuff I found for my 82 Holdsworth: "Schwinn vintage old school silver tinted NOS" from Ebay.

100%. After years of using the least expensive bar tape I could find (usually Deda Elementi) and just replacing it more often (because while it does look good initially, it wears & stains quickly), I've come around to Fizik classic for around the 20euro mark. That stuff is really nice. Just beware their idea of "sky blue" is actually celeste - good thing I have a Bianchi to use it on.

I recently put Brooks microfiber tape on my old Schwinn, based on a recommendation from a local shop owner.

I really like the feel of it and it looks great on an older bike with non-aero levers. I reckon the honey color would look very sharp on this bike.

It is perhaps the most difficult tape to wrap that I’ve ever tried, I think because it is somewhat stiff due to having multiple layers and the microfiber layer being substantial. But once it’s on, it’s very nice.

My favorite for the last few years has been Specialized S-Works Roubaix tape. Looks like suede from a foot away, comfy, cleans up easily, and wears really well.

One of the color choices is “charcoal” which, IMHO, would look great on there. They used to make a lighter gray, but I think that color was discontinued. Nice bike!

I'm thinking the honey brown is the way I will go. I forgot to change the photo. The Bike
now has a brown leather Brooks saddle on it. I took the original saddle in the picture
which looks like new off of it because it was suede and would stain easily

I tried it once with the same experience. It's way too thick to wrap and, for me, to both touch and look at. Fortunately, it was a flip.

I realize you didn't ask this, but I really like your gearing. Is that original? I love classic touring bikes ... .

As far as bar tape, the current color looks great with that frame.

Everything on the bike is original. The previous owner bought the bike brand new in 1985 Rode it a half a dozen times and decided biking wasn't for him.
Hung it in his garage until this year when he had his daughter in law post it on facebook. There was one picture of it and I couldn't tell whether it was
just dirty or had rust on it. Thats when I called him and he told me the history of the bike. Sold it to me for $100 and after cleaning it up it looks like new

Deda Elementi Mistral. Doesn't appear to come in a burgundy. Looks nice, wears well, nice to install.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/12273761272...wAAOSwbplhiGL7

I have Brooks Cambium rubber tape on my Gran Turismo. Seems to be doing well, but I probably won't be using it again. Not a wide variety of colors. PITA to install.
