Please help with lugged mtb!
Does anyone know who made these?
Looks italian... Found on local marketplace for a very low price, was interested with what appeared to be a columbus sticker on the seattube... Its Gara Or tubes so not much... Cant find on google anything, I guess the manufacterer sticker was removed, and i cant identify the logo. It seems to have the suntour xcm 3040 group, everything RD, FD, shifters, brake levers, canti brakes (ugliest chunky pieces of plastic ever...) Saddle is Selle San Marco, hubs sakae... And the most interesting piece is the stem and handlebar, quill is 22.2mm but handlebar clamp diameter is 28.6mm!!! It looked fat when i saw it... Can't help but it's cool. I'm confused by what appears to be a generator mount on the seat stay but otherwise, very nice.

Agree it’s a cool frame. There just aren’t that many lugged mtb’s, and it looks well-constructed. OP, are you in Europe? |

I can't help with the brand but those XCM derailleurs, if OEM, would place it 1988-1989. Like Clubman, the generator tab seem curious on an ATB. I'm wondering if this was originally marketed as a city bicycle with street tyres? Also, Gara seems a bit upscale for the components. The serial number may provide a clue to the origin.

I recall seeing ads in magazines in the late 80s/early 90s for a company making 'oversized' handlebar/stem interfaces. I can't recall the name of the company but I think it was a well known one - Tioga? I don't know if that's what you've got there.

Unless someone did build a Gara OR framed ATB with rack mounts and Gen tab and XCM gear….. but I think the Gara sticker doesn’t go |

Generator and rack tabs made like on a bso, but it also has forged vertical dropouts that seem really nice... I think you need to start looking for bike brands in the region that start or started with a C. Rock Climber is like the model name and a play on Specialized names like Rock Hopper and Stumpjumper.

I am going to be the contrarian and say that I think the Gara sticker is right, and that this is a very little known company outside of eastern Europe. Or Germany/Swiss product.
Odd little rack mount braze-ons lead me to believe it is a quirky little Euro-maker. With the cantilever brazeons, I am going to guess it is a quasi-camp-touring from somewhere unusual...and more than likely I am completely wrong. Still 22.2 quill What is the threading on the bottom bracket and the seatpost size? That might help. |
Finally had a good look over the bike.
I took pictures of everything. Frame specs: TopTube 560mm, SeatTube 540mm, HeadTube angle is 70.5 degrees, Chainstays are 445mm Weight of the frame is 3060g, fork is 985g Frame is brazed, not a single weld. Bottom bracket is 70mm wide, ITALIAN threads. Rear dropout is 130mm wide. Chainstays are nicely curved. Someone drilled the top tube and routed the cable internaly, looks ugly... There is a brazeon on the down tube for 3 cables, dont know how the rear brake cable is routed if it goes that way... Also on the bb plastic cable guide are 3 grooves. Kickstand plate is brazed in an angle, looks stupid lol There is a tube just over the plate so if I modify the frame the plate will be removed. Seatpost is 26.2mm branded Selcof (made in italy), saddle is Selle San Marco Linea. Fork has a half visible stamp YUA?.....TA, a crest with a spoked wheel, under it is 1991, and under it diameter 22.25mm, pretty nice dropouts and finnish, color coresponds to the white on the frame, all the colors on the frame and fork have a pearlescent hue up close. The whole Suntour xcm group is dated '89. Stem and handlebar have only a stamped logo, that looks like a double W, dont know what it is. My opinion is the frame is not a atb or old mtb, but it was built up as one in the early '90s, probably a quality touring or city bike frame. What are the outer dimensions of the seat tube? The angles and canti-brazes still have me thinking quirky gravel tourer build whether or not the tubes are Gara. Also, it’s lugged and looks oversized. Could be a repaint of something cool. Italian threading definitely could indicate that it’s Columbus tubing. Its a cool bike nonetheless. Putty and fill the brake cable holes and it should be fun to create whatever you want from it. |
Third groove on the bb plastic guide is for chainstay mounted u-brake, which this bike doesn't have...

Was thinking of a similar build, already have many parts to go on it, and did some work to get it on the road. Cleaned the frame and fork, repacked the headset and bb (gonna keep this one for now), and installed a new stem and cable hanger.
