Stronglight 93 pedal thread question

Okay, really two-and-a-half questions.

(1) Did Stronglight make the 93 crank with British pedal threads (9/16 in.). I know I,ve seen such things listed in the past, but I do not know if ever they came like that from the factory or if they were retapped after purchase. Also, the crankset in question was original spec on a, early 1970s Gitane TdF that was first sold in Milwaukee (Ware's), FWIW.

(2) If the answer to Question 1 is "yes," where do I look on the crankarm to see if it is British threaded or French threaded (14mm?), and (2.5) what markings am I looking for?

Thanks in advance..

Many thanks

...I don't know if they ever made them that way. Every one I've had was rethreaded by me to accept standard pedals, so I could use something wide enough for my feet, that was not exorbitant in pricing on the used, French threaded pedal marketplace.

The only advice I can offer is that if you buy one, and it's French threaded, it's not a difficult job to tap them out standard. And the Hozan pedal taps work the best of any I have used, because of their length and more gradual taper. Which is not really an answer to your question.

They're marked on the backside with the threading (at least the original threading; I've retapped many French threaded ones to English).

I always check this sort of thing with verified parts, pedals etc that will be used. This often warrants a trip to the co-op for a sacrificial part to make a chaser out of and bolster my tool arsenal.

Many have been buggered, kludged, butchered or otherwise hacked in some way and are not still as marked nor done right for the likely "upgrade".

The TA/Stronglight crank puller threads are a good example, many have been compromised when one or the other was forced in and used because the threads were sloppy from time, use of wrong tool or hamfisted correct tool, etc.

The last one I worked on didn't want to take either very well at all, after I scribed the threads clean with the right angle pick, I was able to chase the threads with the correct tool and anti-seize to get the crank off and have the threads be good to go, tool was able to be installed tight and bottomed out for pulling the next time.

Yes.

It should be marked on the back of the arm: "14 x 125" for French thread; "9/16 x 20F" for English thread. N.B. it is possible that an arm marked "14 x 125" has been re-tapped by a previous owner to accept 9/16 x 20tpi pedals.

The Stronglight 93s used on Raleigh Gran Sports (and some Competitions) were English-threaded, as were the T.A. and Nervar cranksets that Raleigh also used.
