Need advice for dark rim choices
 

I recently bought an 88 Schwinn Tempo frame and fork that I'm going to begin building into a hopefully fun and good looking bike. I'm going to go with black wall tires and dark anodized or black rims, new or used. I have Mavic MA40s on 2 of my other bikes already so I thought I'd try something different this time. I'm looking for 36 hole rims that I'll build using an NOS set of Miche Competition hubs I've had for a while. So, what would you recommend?

The H+Son TB14 and Soma El Nino rim come to mind for hard-anodized new production. :thumb:

How do they compare to the CR-18?

The only advice I would offer is to NOT get rims with anodized braking surfaces. The anodizing will wear off. unevenly. and look awful in fairly short order. Get rims with a machined braking surface. They work better and do not uglyfi with use. I do have a really nice set of Mavic black rims, with the machined braking surface. I will never be able to use them as I restore older bikes and the rims that I have have 32 spoke holes.

CR18s are fat and chunky, where m13ii's are swift and slender.

I love hard anodized rims. Yes, with time and use they don’t look the same, but that’s how you know they got some honest use. Nothing wrong with patina.

Open Pro CD are my favorite and still available new, have 1 set laced to Phils and another to 10 speed Campy Record. They would look good on an 80s bike as the profile is similar to the earlier Open 4 CD.

I’ve had vintage Matrix ISO, Sun Chinook, Wolber Alpine. Of these I would skip the Wolbers, had 2 Miyatas which came stock with them and both had rears replaced. I ride 62cm frames and they obviously don’t hold up to people my size.

I knew I'd get a lot of great advice from this group. I'll make a decision later today or in the next few days. This build is going to be fun because of the bike I chose to use. I wanted something fast and fun looking so I chose the Tempo. It will also be the first bike I've built since last year. I'm usually always working on a new bike but I've been battling cancer since last march. I've lost 55 pounds since June because I haven't been able to eat much. My throat is still burned pretty bad from the radiation but they say it will improve. I have hardly ridden all summer long so this build will be my return to biking and I wanted to make it fun. Thanks to all for their suggestions and help as always.

On the rim front, I find myself attracted to the anodized grey H plus Son Archetype rims, for whatever reason. They're probably not as dark as you'd prefer. Keep thinking about picking up a set to build on some Campy hubs for an upcoming project. I've also kept an eye on the Kinlin XR26 as they have an offset rear if you need it for better NDS tension, and come in black with MSW.

I love the way they look but I don't want to spend that much on this bike. I'll be using all parts from my parts bins for this build. Maybe on the next one.

This is almost exactly what I’m looking for, except I’d like tubeless. Is there a tubeless rim from them that looks appropriate for our bikes?

I finally finished the bike. I ended up going with Velocity rims with Dura Ace hubs. I mentioned in an earlier post that I wanted to use parts from all the extras I had and I pretty much kept to that plan. Dura Ace derailleurs, hubs and brake levers. Shimano 600 calipers, Suntour bar end shifters, SR seatpost and Avocet saddle. It turned out looking just how I wanted, and it rides great.

Lookin’ good!! I’ll be freshening up my Circuit later this year but it won’t be nearly as purdy.

Nicely done Tempo. IMO, Tempos punch well above their weight class. Love the ride of my ‘85 but am always keeping an eye out for these later styles. This Italian flag colorway is my fave.
