I have a permanent position...

Hey folks!
So apart from the occasional frame question, I've been very bad at posting and keeping in touch. The reason is a new job.
A year ago I was asked to do the snagging (punch lists) for 44 new build houses, which kept me busy all summer. At the end of the summer, before I'd finished the snagging, I was asked by the boss if I would like a permanent position as maintenance manager on the site. I took a few weeks to decide, but said yes, so am now gainfully employed keeping this place running.
I'll post a couple of pics and some detail a bit later (if you're not interested just don't read it! :P ) but I basically have a team of 8 to manage, and as it was built in the pandemic and did not go smoothly (:trainwreck:), you could say I have my work cut out.
In theory, I have 2 days off a week for fettling and riding (which I'm not yet back to), but in practice I mostly sleep and do paperwork that I don't have time for while on site.
So, I'd like to think that I'll be on here a little more in the very near future, but I'm not holding my breath...
I kind of miss these pages
Best to all of you,
Milo

Congratulations on the new job! Being gainfully employed is nothing to sneeze at. I have no doubt you'll be back on the bike once things settle down a bit.

EDIT: Wowza, that place looks amazing!

My wife and I are considering Brittany for retirement but that looks much nicer. She's a fab pastry Chef and I'm just all talent so give us a shout, comme ça? :innocent:

Congrats!

Congratulations are in order, I'd say. If you're going to be in charge of something, it might as well be a chateau in southern France. :)

MiloFrance 02-07-22 12:21 PM

A probably not-quite-exhaustive list:
I'm in charge of 8 humans, 44 villas, 25 private pools, 2 communal pools, 3 jacuzzis (hot tubs), 8 hotel rooms, 2 restaurants, a chateau, the health spa (inc. one hot tub and a pool, as well as the sauna and Hammam), a wine caveau (selling wine), around 35 communal MTBs, a fresh water pumping station, 2 waste water pumping stations and an eco friendly sewage plant.

Even the positioning of these lights fell in to my lap..

The team

Ridiculous swimming pool, around 420m3, 110,000 gallons

Pump house!

Nice. Somehow, at some point, some balance needs to be found. I have to find time for my cycling, it is my mental and physical release. Wish you the best.

As a guy who used to work as a writer/editor for a builder's magazine, I recognize a full-time job when I see one. Lots of HVAC and plumbing there! It's also nice to see the phrase "punch list" again.

I salute your optimism, but describing your position as "permanent" seems a tiny bit optimistic. I'm guessing you're a little younger than some of the rest of us around here.

shoota 02-07-22 01:34 PM

Holy cow! I think I need to come visit you at your new workplace!

cb400bill 02-07-22 02:21 PM

Your absense has been noticed. All will be forgiven if you send us some bottles of French wine.

Wildwood 02-07-22 02:33 PM

Looks rather snazzy.
Make sure the bikes you ride while employed match the other decor. ;) :)

We will be here when you return.

alas, I have no snazzy French bikes as examples.

retroman57 02-07-22 02:49 PM

I'm seriously jealous!

 H**Y CRAP!!!!!

That's awesome.

Glad you made it through and they were smart enough to keep you on for the throughput, especially if you see it as a good idea, hope it all works out well for you. :twitchy:

Accommodations onsite provided?

Glad you're back. :thumb:

I hope they are paying you very well. You are going to earn every centime.

Gary12000 02-07-22 04:41 PM

whats an MTB? Motor Torpedo Boat?? if it is that's a tad aggressive lol

beech333 02-07-22 06:57 PM

motorbike?

Prowler 02-08-22 05:47 AM

I’m real happy for you. Beautiful region and facility. You’re in a great position to keep on top of it all rather than play catch-up all the time. A lesson from my, so called, career: tell ‘‘em what they need to hear, not what they want to hear. Keep in touch.

I can’t be the only one who immediately started mentally noting the water on the floor from an apparently long-standing leak (the rust) and the all but crumbled cinder block wall where the pipes penetrate the wall.

pH- injector failed, so the staining is from a pool of acid that also ate a load of the concrete. Water on the floor is from backwashing a filter, the flow on a BW is way too high for the drain so we get a wet floor. The cinderblocks are pretty much built in to the hillside as the pump room is below the pool level...

More pics. There are some things that are just a result of lack of insight, like the fire in Reception being a pain because there is a huge extractor in the kitchen 30 m away, powerful enough to suck the air back down the flue in certain circumstances. Because it's all new we're learning about the quirks every day, but it's still a darned fine place to work... :D
