Cool? Indeed and worth their weight in gold (pardon the play on a word) when it comes to stopping power. I am a Mafac fan and those calipers are beautiful.

I love Mafacs. Brilliantly engineered, but they can take a little tinkering to get perfect…but there are tricks. It is amazing the combined tire/fender clearance that you can obtain with them, especially with brazed on mountings, and the Competition model is my favorite for the higher mechanical advantage( noticeably better than the 2000/Racer and better still than the Raid) As a non-vintage aside, the mate up very well with Campagnolo Ergopower levers….

If someone back in the heyday of MAFAC brakes knew about filing the washers to toe them in, they weren't letting on. Most of us just tried to bend them like we did with every other brake and it didn't work very well. My bike with Racers squeals when the rims are wet, but not otherwise.

Since they are fully adjustable including stradle pull length I have found they work good various type levers I have got Mafac comps to work nicely with not so great modern brifters and cheap MTB strait levers.

That will work just fine. I’m also a fan of MAFAC brakes. Yes, setting them up right takes more work than most other brakes, but I know how.

In the collection retired bike shop owner Bob Freeman. Bob rides a lot, always on vintage bikes, but I bet this one is mostly a wall-hanger.

The hubs are Phil Wood, believe it or not. Strange choice, since Maillard 700 came in gold, but they can be hard to find.
He says some of the stuff came in gold, other parts he had anodized for this bike, doesn't say which. I'm guessing those TA pedal cages never came in gold, anyone know? Probably the saddle rails too.
This shows how hard it is to get matching color anodizing. Even if done at the same time by the same anodizer, different alloys and different surface prep (polishing) can make for drastically different results.
