Cycling specific touring shorts and knickers worked well for this gang.

If the ride is long enough for padded undies to be a good idea, then denim would be an obviously bad choice: heavy, and a sponge for sweat or rain.

As for alternatives to denim, and for styles, well, it depends on expected temperature, humidity, precipitation, etc, as well as UV light, your sensitivity to UV light, how irksome it is to slather your legs in sunblock, what choice your closet already gives you, et cetera.

When the temperature's likely to remain over 25 degrees or so I usually wear shorts, but even up to 32 degrees or so I'd happily wear my usual cycling pants, which are very thin (95% nylon, 5% polyurethane) and go down to the ankles, where they're tightened with velcro. They've lasted many thousands of kilometres, accumulating grease stains from chainwheels along the way, but otherwise seem as good as new. They're easy to wash and dry very quickly. In winter I wear long johns a lower-body base layer underneath them. (I also have the same style of cycling pants, but lined for winter; however, I virtually never wear them and in retrospect shouldn't have bought them.)

The real fashionistas are wearing their padded cycling underwear over their cycling pants these days.

Depends on the era of the bike one is riding.
90s - Zubaz
80s - Parachute pants
70s - Bell bottoms
60s - High waisted floral print
50s - Slacks

I ride 1 of 2 ways:

(1) street clothes, normal shoes, no padded shorts

(2) full roadie kit, bibs, jersey, cleats etc

One or the other, no half measures.

How about a kilt? Can never look like too much of a dork on a bike!
