What's he riding and where do you suppose he's going?

Appears to be a bicycle, and looks like he’s going places.

Chinghis 05-28-22 11:33 PM

His son's (decent) ten-speed, avoiding the oil embargo.

merziac 05-29-22 01:55 AM

Hat?, gloves, warm zip up sweater under his jacket, trouser leg clips and sturdy dress shoes.

On his way to work and he ain't playin. ;)

beicster 05-29-22 03:58 AM

That is a great picture.

I see only '65 and earlier model cars in the photo, looking fairly fresh. Along with the guy's attire, that looks like mid-60s to me.

ehcoplex 05-29-22 05:41 AM

He's going to work for The Man.

I seldom wear long pants today while cycling, but those metal Terry's trouser hoops were part of my standard commuting attire for many years. Back in the mid-to-late 1960s, when that photo was taken (you can see a 1965 Ford Galaxie behind the cyclist), centerpull brakes did separate middle and higher end bikes from the department store specials (and the tubular-forked Schwinn Continentals from the flat-forked Varsities).

I’d love a Marathon. Is that a Volvo on his right? I’m guessing a Raleigh

rustystrings61 05-29-22 07:55 AM

This could have been a picture in Richard’s Bicycle Book if they hadn’t chosen to go with the lovely line drawings, to accompany the passage where he mentioned how bicycles won every race point to point against cars, buses and subways … or was that Tom Cuthbertson’s Anybody’s Bike Book that cited that factoid?

bikemig 05-29-22 08:21 AM

This could be one of the posters in C & V . . . .

63 Coronet, rompin, stompin stock/super stock terrorizing drag version were and still are amazing how hard and fast these behemoths can run. ;)

These can hook up so hard they will pull 3 wheels off the ground while running record setting numbers.

Strange now to think that in the mid sixties there were hardly any bikes for adults. Much less drop bar derailleur bikes. He was a rarity.

Chrysler product I think.

steelbikeguy 05-29-22 09:11 PM

it's not exactly an example of commuting, but perhaps more like utility riding...
I've been scanning some of my dad's old photos & slides, and some are from the mid 50's when he was serving in the Army in Germany. It looks pretty interesting, overall, and sure beats fighting the North Koreans at that time.
In any case, it's been fun poking around and looking at the various details in the photo.

'63 Polara on his right, '65 Coronet across the street. This stuff mattered in high school.

Wow, that's a Tempo Matador on the right.

only in Germany would a Matador be gray and ugly.
[edit: although the AMC Matador might not be so great either. I gotta give Germany a break, since it was in the difficult post-war years]
The Spanish & Mexicans have a more colorful tradition!

Of the two, the Spanish and Mexican version might be more dangerous, though.

(the bullfight was in San Luis, Mexico, circa 1980, so fairly C&V)

Discernible vehicles, from left to right, 63 Dodge, 65 Ford, Checker Marathon (no model year differentiation), 65 Dodge Coronet.

I think you're right!

steelbikeguy 05-31-22 08:32 PM

since folks seem to like looking at old cars, I'll offer up a follow-up to the earlier shot of my dad cycling in Germany. This is another shot on the same street, but with a (beer?) truck outside of the gasthof, probably delivering something. Neat truck, but I also notice the abundance of VW Beetles.

On the other hand, there is no record of a Spaniard or a Mexican ever invading Poland. And the bull might prefer the Germans.

I think I see "NY" in the lower left hand corner of the taxi's license plate, so I'm guessing Manhattan and he's on his way to a morning of drudgery before his three martini lunch.

Lousy helmet, BTW. That soft shell thing simply won't get the job done.
