The search for Lagoon Blue

I had a Gran Sport with a lot of small nicks to work on and tried colour-matching with various mixes of modeler's paints, not much success; 10 ft away you can still see it, but it was an N-1 destined machine so I let it go.

Then I got another Raleigh and it needed more than touch-up and a colour by Rustoleum called "Seaside" had come to my notice. That machine is
a paused project right now, but a few days ago the one I touched up came back for maintenance, so I could compare.

Not sure you can match oxidation.
Try an auto body paint store. They got a gizmo.

I remember seeing these bikes new and the color was pretty close to Rustolium Maui Blue #269292. The can I have is old so it may not be around anymore.

I'd take a look a Testors 1208T enamel for a cheap fix. It is close in color, and your original paint is faded anyway, but you would have to cover all of the blue areas to make it look right.

Those two bikes appear as two different blues to me.
Testor's paint should work but I think the nearest will be a sky blue, then you will need a white and a yellow, maybe even black to get close.

Go to this page to determine the colors and amounts to achieve the color you want. That's what I do when I seek a specific color. Once found, you might be able to take your findings to a auto paint store and have them mix up a rattle can or two for you. If you can do your own spray work, so much the better. In my case, I do my paint work with a paint brush and am always happy with the result (but i takes practice do get good at it). Anyway, thought that this might be of some help and, for what it is worth, it is kinda fun to play with.

I'd be willing to bet that there are as many shades of lagoon blue as there are shades of celeste, especially when you factor in fading from UV. I have a few Gran(d) Sport(s), you don't notice it so much as the bikes have two tone paint jobs, and most of the sales were the mostly white variety as far as I can tell. Put them next to each other and you'll likely see a noticeable difference.

If you can get RGB values for the colour this site will show manufacturers paint colours that match ordered by "delta E" which is how much they differ from the RGB value:

You can get the RGB value with a decent camera if you know how to account for lighting (Kodak grey card etc).

missed the they are not the same comment in the original post, but in looking again, the loose frame is probably not original paint anyway.

That is the color I used on my Grand Sports bikes.

I agree, the loose frame is a repaint. The the decal says “Super Course” which is not a bike that was available in Lagoon Blue. What seat tube transfer is that?

Who wouldn't? That's got to be better than sitting on a beach, in a chair sipping a Corona! :D

Anyone "conversant in Testors" enough to know which bottle of non-spray is that hue? I just need to make a couple of tiny touch-ups (I think!). Same question on the white often paired with Lagoon Blue.

Help me to avoid simply stripping the paint off and having the frame powder-coated red, like all my other bikes! :eek:

I suggest looking here. There's not an exact match, but something close that can be made closer with an addition of black or white or green. You can find the paint at Micheals or Hobby Lobby. Online, I would try Dick Blick.

Thanks :thumb:; if one goes by "color name" alone, it's 1108TT. Once I drive to Hobby Lobby, it's only a couple of bucks to try it out (round trip gas more than the cost of the paint). I need to keep my head on straight and presume one will always be able to tell (I am "patina-averse" but making the result perfect can be challenging). And don't even get me started on the various shades of white, such as on this Raleigh...

I would hazard a guess that Brompton has got a close match to that paint color.

Yes, it's a re-paint, was originally Raleigh's "Coffee", a sort of faded (well faded when I got it) bronze .
The seat transfer in the centre is the white-outlined version of the black Carlton badge.
The bands at the top and bottom of the white panel are just generic uk-flag bands to cover the blue-white transition.

Looks like meant-to-be. :thumb: Perhaps Raleigh should have done that from the factory.
