Helping a kid out...
 

A friend of Sarah's and I had a son going into 8th grade next fall. The tradition at his school is all 8th graders ride to school. This kid didn't have a bike and didn't know how to ride one so I put together a 77 ish motobecane grand touring for him and we helped him learn to ride it on my dead end Blvd. What an amazing Thursday it was. Sorry I didn't take better pics.

also.. good for the neighbor's son! Learning at that age has got to be a little harder than as a small kid. If nothing else, he has further to fall at that age. :)

It took a good half hour but he was riding at the end of it
Also I told him he would have the coolest bike in 8th grade

That is inspiring. I expect to see that kid racing in France July 2032

What a great thing to get younger people into cycling and hopefully raise interest in older bikes at the same time! lucky young man for sure.

Congratulations to him on getting a new bike and learning to ride it! The Grand Touring is a awesome first bike because it’s genuinely fun to ride. I hope he has great year biking to and from school.

I know right? I couldn't believe that it was a thing. When I was a kid we all rode or walked but no one does either at many schools these days.

Going to request that you post updates on how he gets along with the bike and riding in the coming months.

Hey, I gave the bike to him.... And honestly when he picked it up he was shocked by the lightness. As my son the bike mechanic says, modern entry level bikes have become pigs.

I'm gonna let the kid buy the next one.

Also, he's not ready for a straight razor.

I learned how to ride a bike when I was in 8th grade. Self taught on the grocery store delivery bike. I've since put on over 350,000 miles. I hope riding brings him the joy it has brought me.

This sort of kindness is truly impressive. Well done and we all owe you a debt of thanks for simply being a decent human being.
