Help with a Mercier Identification

Saw this bike for sale and was curious about its pedigree. Lovely paint job and the Simplex dropouts make this a little bit more than a stamped steel frame. I was surprised how little there was in the way of catalogs to hone in on the specific model. Looks like a bike boom era 70s bike based on the Simplex FD and other parts that are still original. Someone liked it enough to add some Velo Orange parts in setting it up as an upright.

Any specific info would be appreciated.

typically in this era these came in 3 models: the top-of-line was the 300, all 531DB which this is not.

Bottom of line was the 'gaspipe' 100 which was the Mercier equivalent to a Peugeot U08 (more or less) which had much the same graphics as this but IIRC not this much chrome nor the Simplex stamped DOs.

But that's where the divide between the 100 and next model up (200, natch) gets murky cause the mid grade model is hard to nail down except it generally has better grade 3-mains tubing and more 'deluxe' bits like the contrasting lugs and chrome socks/forkcrown...but some 100s can also have such details too.

So, is there any decal that says what tubing this one might be built from?

appears to have commenced life as a boom era model 100, ca. 1972

rear mech, handlebar, brake levers, mudguards, saddle and rear rack are not original

you may find a date marking on the underside of the Simplex Prestige front derailleur body and/or in a small diamond symbol on the Rigida SUPERCHROMIX wheel rims

Pretty decent rear dropouts for a UO-8 class bike, though? I guess the seatpost diameter will provide additional info.

My Mercier is that same model and originally the same color and graphics. Its a great riding bike. This pic shows it with wide 700c knobby tires that I use in winter and off road.

And here with narrow road tires for speedy group rides on the weekends.

The paint and graphics on that Mercier is in astounding conditiion. I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Upgrade a few items and you have a heck of a nice bike.

that model of Juy dropout is how the model 100 came

you can compare it it to other known 100's for a confirmation...

Errata: there WAS a model below the "100" but don't see them (me, anyway) in the US. This was the "90" and seems to have zero chrome, maybe cheaper unbranded stamp ends and also the mysterious "Luxtub" plain steel tubing used for virtually every model below the full 531 DB "300". tho what the "200"s got was variable (or disputed)

I believe this to be a Mercier 90 if these pictures help at all, while repainted there is no evidence of chrome and it has stamped dropouts.

anyone willing to pick it up in San Diego can have it…
