Bikes: Miyata 610(66cm), GT Vantara Hybrid (64cm), Nishiki International (64cm), Peugeot rat rod (62 cm), Trek 800 Burning Man helicopter bike, Bob Jackson frame (to be restored?) plus a never ending stream of neglected waifs from the Bike exchange.

Most valuable hubs????

At the bike Exchange we are having a problem.

We have more wheels than we can store.

As a result we are going to have to throw away or some how get rid of those we are unlikely to be able to use or sell within a space of a few months.

I have suggested that before tossing we should check the hubs to see if they are worth keeping.

Campi hubs , of course, and Dura ace, are on my list but I would like input from you folks as to what other hubs we should cut out of a wheel and put on E bay.

We have hundreds of wheels hanging on racks and one storage room full of them plus wheels lining a hallway that are a code violation.

HELP!!!

If you are close to Silicon Valley and want some wheels we might be able to throw some your way.

I wouldn’t limit my Shimano hubs to just DA. Ultegra/600 and 105 are nice too. I do like Mavic hubs too especially the 500/550.

Weyless, Hi-E, Sansin, Suntour, Sunshine, BH, Resillion, Phil, American Classic, FB, Gipiemme, Ofmega, and we haven't even touched on the french marques.

Of course there's high and low end models of some of these so a little knowledge would go a long way.

Steel rims = trash

Stainless double butted spokes = save or disassemble wheels.

High quality, UNDAMAGED rims = save


Perhaps, the thing to do is disassemble the valuable wheels. Using a screw gun, you could disassemble a wheel in a few minutes. You could do quite a few in a day. In a week,... many. If they have galvanized spokes, cut them and remove them. Hubs and spoke store much more compactly than wheels. Unassembled rims are a lot more compact, too.

Advertise the wheels for sale at super-low prices on Craigs List.

Put a home made sign out front offering to give one set per person, free.

Maybe it's because I have an obsession with preserving 126mm drop-outs, I would preserve any and all 7 speed 126mm spaced Shimano HG hubs, which would be FH6401, FH1055, FH-A550, FH-A410, FH-HG20, FH-HG50. Or at the very least, harvest the 7 speed HG freehub body off of it.

As you disassemble the wheels, sort out the alloy rims that you won't be saving. Aluminum prices are up a bit right now and a trip to the scrap yard could yield some cash that the co-op could use to buy cables, and chains. Those are the most frequently used items in the co-op here. HTH, Smiles, MH

Ultegra 6500 and 105 (5500) 9-speed era hubs are really, really nice, near functional equivalents to same-period Dura-Ace (7700), and are much lighter than their predecessors.

Cones (still smooth of course) should be rescued from any discarded wheels using Atom or Normandy hubs, and many other hubs.

Atom/Maillard hubs often were fitted to bicycles (1980's Schwinns in particular) with such tight bearing adjustment that the bikes are seldom found with un-damaged cones!
So I always salvage them when I can. A problem does arise with fitting them to non-Schwinns though, since the cones on Schwinns often had axle-retention parts literally made onto their cones. Being an American bike company selling so many bikes (often to novice riders with more money than mechanical aptitude), they unfortunately had to cover their liability risks with use of the troublesome axle safety hardware.
