I choose my rides carefully! At 78 I know where all the comfort stations, fire plugs and big bushes are along the way!
Bibs would be nice if they had a front opening.
I started wearing Kucharik Lycra shorts with gel panels over 15 years ago. They're closing but I have 4 pairs left so that should last me... What I like about them is I have short thighs. Many shorts come down to my knees and fit me like knickers. Kucharik shorts fit me perfect.

I do have several sets of bibs, and prefer how they feel. I am a spare tire carrier, so there could be that. But, they are not as convenient if you need to do any other business........But comfortable for riding? Very.

Bibs for the last 20 years. I have a few pairs of shorts for the (very) occasional indoor trainer ride, but love the comfort of bibs for rides of any length beyond neighborhood errands.

Bibs are much more expensive than shorts so I usually buy shorts and the nice ones work fine. If money were not part of the process, I would have nothing but bib$.

I mostly ride shorts, but have one pair of Specialized bibs. I thought I should try a pair of bibs since so many people swear by them. For me, meh...I like both shorts & bibs for different reasons. The type of padding/chamois is more important to me whether they are bibs or shorts.
Bibs: Jersey seems to glide over the bibs while pedaling, instead of rubbing against skin. Not really an issue with shorts, but it is a nice & different feel. Don't have to worry about showing too much from behind. On the downside, my bib straights are just a bit tighter than I'd like. On long rides, I do start to feel the straps tugging on my shoulder. I'm fairly cheap when it comes to clothing, and I've found bibs are surprisingly expensive compared to shorts. FWIW, my bibs are low and stretchy enough that I can pull down the front for no. 1.
Shorts: More convenient changing & during restroom breaks. Cooler on hot days. Classic & traditional.

Bibs for the real rides though. Pearl Izumi Pro is my preference (someday will break down and buy Rapha... but not today).

I gave up on Lycra a long time ago.
Street shorts work but they tend to get sticky when damp from sweat.
