Specialized Expedition?

Hi all-
Came across a Specialized Expedition at our local mission school thrift shop. . Looks to be about '83. Nice shape, intact and complete. Belonged to a triathlete. They also had her composite Trek. Looking at doing a Rivendell sort of conversion. North Road bars, fatter tires. Anybody stuck bigger tires on one? Wondering how far I can go? Any comments on suitability for this idea? Currently riding a Surly Cross Check set up similar. Looks like longer chainstays on the Specialized. Probably a better tubeset. Just a prettier, more classic looking bike. Thanks, Bill

First link I found when I googled "Specialized Expedition 1983": 1983 Specialized Expedition: Review – My Favorite Bike Parts (wordpress.com)

And here's every bikeforums thread that includes the keywords: "Specialized expedition 1983":

Good price for a very solid touring bike.

That function of the google search bar makes forums like these a real wealth of information. I dunno how else I would find stuff on this site when I need to read up on some esoteric C&V bike part.

Nice find. As far as tire size goes, I was able to fit 38mm Gravelkings on mine with fenders. Tight fit, but no problems.

1984/85 Expedition.
700x42 might be possible without fenders.

Tried the 42 off my Cross Check. Barely, but it did go in. Sure changed the ride from 28c!

Are you going for something like this. The upright bars made it a fun to ride on rail trails with the family.

I had a pair of Soma Supple Vitesse 42c's on it and they fit, but just barely.
