1984 Cannondale ST with hydraulic brakes
Hello all,
This is my first post here. I thought I would share my ride that will take me 200 miles this weekend for the Seattle to Portland ride. This is my favorite yard sale freebie, a 1984 Cannondale ST. I don't know how to distinguish the early models since I don't know much about components. It does however have frame lugs and the original touring racks front and rear.
My favorite feature is the Matthauser hydraulic brakes that were on it. They still function perfectly and add a bit of novelty to this ride.
The original owner changed the downtube shifters to stem shifters. Not my preference, but I've kept it that way. This guy must have loved this bike, he engraved his name on every component.
I don't know anything about modern bikes. I've never ridden anything that didn't have friction shifters. I like dumpster finds and freebies. This one sure fits the bill.

I guess I can't share my photos so this is not a very interesting first post.
I'll add photos when I've met the criteria.

Welcome!! Which ST did you get? ST300 or ST500? The 300 looks like it was the frameset and the 500 the full bike. Sounds like your going to have fun on this ride

Hi Kermie,
I've looked at the catalog, but I really don't know how to tell them apart unless I identify each component. I read elsewhere on this forum that the frames were all the same. I guess someone would order the ST 300 and build up their own ride? Maybe someone can help me out here when I can post photos.
I'm really looking forward to the STP. The weather will be cool and it's fully supported.

Hi @Adair,
Put a photo or three in your 'album', and one of us can post it here... at the rate you're going, you'll have ten posts in no time... but there's also a 5 post/day newbie limit.
Strict, the rules are.
I wasn't even aware of any hydraulic brakes from the 80s except Magura.
That's kind of cool and special, though they're a bit of an solution in search of a problem.
cheers -mathias

Welcome to the forum, fellow PNW’er. While we’re waiting for your pics, here’s an ebay listing of those brakes. https://www.ebay.com/itm/18535570607...mis&media=COPY

Pretty cool niche stuff. Adair Do they still work pretty well?

I added a few photos to my album. The Cannondale carried me 200 happy miles on the STP this weekend. I really like riding this bike. I really don't like riding over the Colombia River on a 200' tall bridge.
The brakes perform fine. It looks like pads are still available so I don't see any reason to change them out. I'll cross my fingers that I don't have catastrophic failure.
I wondered if anyone would notice them amongst 8,000 riders, but they must have been focused on their pacelines.
