Amateur Purchasing a new Bike - Needs advice
Hey all,
Absolute amateur here that is trying to learn more -
I am trying to purchase a bicycle and I am stuck between cheap new builds and bikes that are older, but well maintained. The purpose of the bike that I need is to commute 10 miles each way a day, and go for long weekend cycles.
I have found this bike below that avaliable for purchase - is it worth it?
It's Fausto K14 Coppi bike - selling for 295 Pounds - I'd post the link however it does not let me sadly. The only thing I can do is post the gumtree ID: 1437373970 (selling site)
I do apologise if this is not the right section.

It isn't the bike I'd commute on but I'm not you. Better minds will be along shortly.

Certainly fits the sport side of your equation. Nice little bike.
Seems pretty racing-type geometry so how comfortable as a commuter, not sure. Most commuters have cushier wider tires and perhaps a rack and maybe even fenders. Doubt those will fit. Depends on your commute though.
if I were in a position to commute (I cannot unfortunately and actually live; not a bike friendly area) /sport ride at distance, I might be looking at two bikes. One beater type and the Coppi.
However, if it needs to be one bike, maybe something like a vintage sport set Raleigh or Gitane? Austria’s Daimler Inter 10 or SLE.

Are we looking at the same bike? The yellow one I am seeing is seriously worn, has a mish-mash of non matching parts, and needs a lot of time and a fair bit of money thrown at it to get it into a nice shape.
I like the idea of getting an older, well-maintained bike. But this is not one of those.

Don't buy this bike. The bent and mismatched shifters in pic 2 show that this bike has probably been crashed. And the long uncut cables of the front brake (routed moto style to the right lever), and the front derailleur tell me the mechanic that hoped to fix the issues from this crash likely didn't know what they were doing. Do not inherit their gremlins. If you want "bikes that are older, but well maintained?" This ain't it. Furthermore, this is an aluminum race bike with no provisions for attaching racks, fenders, anything. There should be more commuting-friendly options than this.

Two big issues regarding purchase. First, the mechanical condition and geometry are, at best, questionable. Second, for commuting and, of course, parking conditions, the presence of Campagnolo components make the bike a prime target for thieves (my opinion but I would NOT commute with a Campy equipped bike).

Hey Randy, I'll plug for the website you created "My Ten Speeds", that could be a big help to this novice, but do you have the link?

I have no idea where in GB you live but...a few items I would look at to get an idea of the commuter sport type bike.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/17534739472...UAAOSwfXZiyy8H
New York for this one, but along the lines of what I might be looking for for dual purpose bike.

And examples of better quality sport bikes.

And since the OP lives in England, I am betting he is more likely to find sport-commuter candidate bikes like that than we are.
i am sure there are a bunch of other Japanese candidate.
From the US, an Elance would be perfect but not sure what availability would be.
