It breaks my heart (Portland OR)
Once again I took the pup for a run along the waterfront and there was a home-displaced man (hey, not trying to piss off the homeless, they have lawyers and PR people here in Portland) riding a bike that was clearly not his. Wrong shoes, handlebars loosened and tilted 90 degrees off. MASI frame.
You can't call in a crime if you aren't the victim, and last thing I need is to be a KAREN.
Besides, maybe it was his best friend's who died of COVID.

I actively avoid driving past a couple of the bad encampments with huge bike piles for fear I might recognize some of mine. I think it's going to keep getting worse before it improves.

Consider Bernie Madoff. I figure Bernie alone stole more than all bicycle thieves (homed or not) in history. In a day.
He got away with it for a long time, because his pedals matched his shoes, so to speak.
The smelly thieves are more personally offensive, for some reason. Weird.

I rode all over Portland and saw plenty of homeless encampments. No one tried to take me or Sarah's stuff and no one was threatening. It was a truly fabulous experience. Love to do it again!

My Portland commute took me across this brand new bicycle/pedestrian bridge yesterday. This city has been doing a great job of making itself more accessible to people who walk and ride bikes. Guess what population walks and rides bikes the most? If that means the guy driving to work in a giant pickup gets sick of looking at tents and decides to move out of Portland, that would be wonderful. Of course, the guy commuting in the giant pickup will only have to drive farther to work here every day, because this is where the jobs are. Shucks.

Here in Ventura there are areas that are worse than others. Local knowledge is key. I ride the " path of least resistance" , I'm pretty sure most urban areas have one! I do not ride my bike to try to solve world problems , quite the opposite .
