Mine had the left to the drum brake, the right went to both cantilevers. I guess you could adjust the cables to determine the front/rear bias. With the weight distribution, you don't really have to worry about skidding.

Congratulations on getting the Peugeot Tandem! It looks great!
Now you'll maybe have two Swiss threaded BB's under your care(?), as those were the years they were still into it..... ( I suspect, one of them might also be an eccentric?).
My 1984 PSV still has a Swiss BB but it was pretty much one of the last very few Peugeots to have it.. it also has a French spes 22.0mm stem........HAPPY DAYS!
Owning a bike with such can be a unique experience these days when looking for replacements, but having two on one bike to look after might make it feel more commonplace..........

It'll be interesting to see what I find when I take the Stronglight BBs apart later today.... with the crank off, the front is very hard and 'crunchy' to turn- I really hope it's salvageable, as I like the Stronglight BBs and it'd be nice not to have to add another thing to the $$ list!

I just installed them on my Schwinn tandem. The holder is 2 1/8" long and the post is centered 1" back from the end of the holder that faces forward. Some of the other KoolStop holders are way too long for the front, although they might work in the back. I probably could have gone a more C&V route in retrospect, but these were expedient. And they're silver.

happened that I had a Tektro shoe that’s almost identical to the KS Cross- definitely hits the fork/seat stays, & with 38c tires they get in the way getting wheels on/off. Going to see how we fare with the original-style Mafac Kool-Stop for now. More than happy with them on my PX10.

They're butt-ugly to start with, and they're black......and they're threaded.....
But I was also looking at the Koolstop 'Eagle 2' pads- I believe the correct orientation is for the long part of the pad to go toward the rear, but I wonder if flipping them would really make any difference in performance? They've got an extra little 'point' at one end, but I wonder how long that actually lasts...


At any rate, I've got some of the 'original' style KS for Mafacs on the way & we'll see how they fare.

Clearly the 'winter' project has become a 'do-it-now' project...



Extremely pleased to find the bottom brackets are in great shape and the crunchiness was all just hardened grease. Interestingly, the front is Stronglight and the rear Nervar (or at least the spindle is-no branding on the cups).



I'll finish the tear-down later today, fingers crossed I find the headset is in as nice shape as the BB when I open it up.

That front angle is a "shovel" to part the sea when wet and prescrape the water off so the rest of the pad can do a better job, the angle is all the way to the top so it keeps working for the life of the pad.

All part of a brilliant design including the orientation IMO.

I don't really have a way to measure.. I could pull the French BB from my in-progress (long, slow..... so many projects!) Valgan to check against, but I'm too lazy. At the moment I don't care too much, as the condition of both BBs is really good! But probably at some point I'll figure it out just to know for reference.

If I'm seeing what I think I'm seeing, then the answer is French BB threading. If that really is a "fixed cup" threaded into the left side of the rear BB. That tells us it's RH thread on both sides, so not Eng or Swiss. I'm going to rashly dismiss the chances of it being Italian as too minuscule to bother considering.

Unsurprisingly, the Delrin FD is toast. The Deore RD is a little sloppy in the pivots (My Cannondale T900 had what appears to be the exact same Deore RD when I got it, and it too was sloppy and had to be replaced... I wonder if that was a weakness of that particular model/version..). I think to get up-and-running and conserve $ I can probably live with the RD for now, much as Shimano on a French bike offends my sensibilities! Also thinking that, not having a ton of tandem experience, an indexed RD isn't such a bad thing- one less thing to think (too much) about when captaining (though the ugly grey-anodized 600 shifter levers are aesthetically very un-pleasing!). Any recs on a cheap-ish, get-it-up-and-running friction FD that may fit a French seat-tube....?

I'm using a Sun Tour Vx. Before I got the rear Simplex repaired, I used a Sun Tour Honor on the back.

On to dealing with the rust spots on the frame..... With my PX-10 I was able to carefully wet/dry sand, feather then paint over the spots with clear nail polish. Many of the spots on the tandem frame are sort of difficult to really get to with sandpaper. Evaporust with a tandem frame is really impractical. Careful application of Naval Jelly maybe?

Evaporust is available in gel form in small packages. Love that frame color…

The last few photos definitely don't do it justice- I think I had my camera set on some kind of film sim. It's more....hmmm, a metallic teal. A pretty cool color!

Frivolously spent some time polishing up the Ventolux pump that came on the bike, cuz..... it's kinda cool and why not? And I'm waiting on delivery of some Evaporust Gel to take on the rust spots. The pump works!

I've always wondered, are those supposed to patriotic-looking? As we all know, the French flag is blue, white and red. There's no white stripe on the handle, but maybe they're using polished aluminum color as a stand-in for white? The older Ad-Hoc brand pump (that Ventolux is shamelessly copying) also had blue and red stripes on polished alloy. Example here.

Note, if you have an Ad-Hoc, even dented and un-usable, don't thow it away, there are people who'll buy it in any condition. They aren't better than a Ventolux or Zefal or whatever, just rare and "collectable". I have an Ad-Hoc and a Ventolux for my old French bike, and I use the Vento when I take that bike out; the Ad-Hoc is too $$ to risk it in the Real World.

I love Peter Weigle's playful faux-repro decal that says "Oh Hec". He has put it on the modified Lezyne pump on at least one his über-detailed custom bikes.

Interesting! My PX-10 had the top-tube clamp-on pump pegs, but alas, no pump... I wonder if it had an Ad-Hoc originally. I've got one of the Lezynes now, and they're pretty good pumps. Will they still function in 40-50-60 years?

I actually think the red and blue plastic bits are kinda goofy..... and they're cracked and barely holding on, so probably won't last long!

And... is there anything Weigle does that isn't love-worthy (bicycle-wise, I mean.... well, and with Volvo 122s, too..... and his boat is kinda neat, too.....)?

I've been trying to squeeze in the cleaning/polishing/etc of at least one component a day among all the other busy-time-of-year summer projects & life (not to mention trying to get a minimum of 20 riding miles in a day...). It's coming along, bit by bit, but I'm pretty sure I'll have it together in time to get at least a few rides in before real cold descends on us- my (hopefully..) stoker DOES NOT like the cold..



I'm trying to decide on bar-tape and cable-housing colors... From the catalog pages I've found online it appears the '80 metallic blue (really a kind of teal) TH-8 had black tape and housing, which seems pretty boring.... White? Orange, to pick up on the downtube logo..? Seats will be a brown B-17 & a brown B-67 I happen to have sitting around.

Moving along... pretty amazing what Evaporust did for what were pretty crusty and rusty pedals. 'No Name', and a little heavy with the steel cages, but they'll do.

Coming along. Awaiting a different stem, bar-taping, fender and rack install. Yes, it's a little too small for me & a little too big for the stoker, but within what's acceptable.

Maybe you know this already but for anyone who doesn't: the stoker never needs to stand over the TT, so standover becomes less important. See if your stoke is OK with mounting as on a horse: put one foot in the near side pedal, then throw the other leg over, with cap'n steadying the bike. "Play the film in reverse" to dismount. Lots of stokers like this way just fine as long as cappy remembers to spread his feet wide and brace the bike well, no wiggle while she's mounting or dismounting.

BTW the bike is gorgeous really nice work. Thanks for bringing us along for the journey..
