Scott drop bar extensions - how were they used?
Can't find any threads here in C&V on this particular product. It may not even be old enough to be C&V, but it seems that way. Anyway, picking up a CL free section box o'crap along with some forgettable modern framesets and some nice-ish '80s-ish wheelsets, there were these:
Almost no 411 about them online. Two on the 'Bay right now, $30 and $50 (eek!) respectively. How were they used? Did people just put them on the ends of a flat bar, for drop-bar-esque riding positions? Were brake levers / brifters mounted on them? Did users wrap them? Have not found one photo of them in use. Maybe that's for a reason....

Pretty sure they fit 23.8mm bars, so only a road bar. I've seen them mounted on the toptube, about where interrupter levers would go.

Wow, these are lost to history already?! Always wanted a pair. They were to be mounted on drop bars, closer to the stem. That gave you an aero, hands in position. I think the uci banned these pretty quickly, which killed sales. At the same time the "Spinaci" extensions were still legal, which made no sense to me.

I still wonder if UCI was/is really that big an influence on the industry as a whole. Don't (didn't) most of us buy what we buy to ride, rather than specifically to race? Maybe there really is a connection, I have no idea.

But, if a person didn't care about UCI, they probably went direct to the bolt on TT bars.

Somewhere, I have an old copy of “Road Bike Action” with a picture of these on a bike in a crit race. Going from memory, they were mounted about midway on the flats.
You could also do a racing/bum bar setup, just for kicks.

The UCI really had it in for Scott.
LaMond used the drop ins to good effect in one TdF.
problem was they were patented.

This picture might help you to better understand how they could be mounted.....
Seems a bit crowded to me....
Sorry about the quality of the picture.
Best, Ben

^^^^^^ Do not use on country roads during deer season.....
I don't imagine how even the younger-brained version of myself could keep track of all the possible hand positions on that.... setup. But thanks xiaoman1 for the visual, helps put it in context.

They are called Scott Rakes. AFIK, they were never banned. I still have a set and used them back when I was racing. They are mounted on the thicker section of the handlebars. I couldn't get them as close as I would like because it induced a speed wobble. I had to mount mine close to the end of the thicker section.
They basically put your arms in front of your legs. You couldn't get the same effects with the Drop-ins. The super Drop-ins allowed you to tuck your elbows in. The Rakes was the follow on.

Yep Scott Rakes - have a pair out there in that "big box of aero stuff" somewhere. As described they mounted on the flats of the handlebar and must moved your drops inboard for a more "aero" position. My best use of them was on a Dahon Folder that had the fixed flat bar that couldn't be changed. Attached these for drops and "Bob's your uncle" I had an extra hand position. They are adjustable with a hex wrench so I could twist them flat and the Dahon would still fold nicely.

^^^^^^ Now that you mention it, I did see at least one online reference to them as "Rakes". Guess I have a "small box of aero stuff" starting to pile up. Been trying to sell a set of these Scott tri-bars that came on a Maruishi I bought, golly it's been years. Maybe I'll offer a 2-for-1 deal for anyone who can demonstrably combine the two.....

Full aerobars didn't sell well back then. We had a DH bar back in the early 90's and it didn't sell while I worked at the bike shop throughout my high school years.

Great picture. As I recall, the Scott Rakes were OK for USCF races, but the UCI banned them for pro races, yet the Cinelli Spinaci's pictured were still legal. Some tortured reasoning about how your hands were too far from the brake levers when using the Scotts, but *just* close enough when using the Cinellis!!!
I had a pair of Drop-ins too. If it was good enough for Lemond, it was good enough for me!

I wonder how much all that hardware weighs, and if it was worth all the contortion needed to get into position......
One would need to have 8 arms to use them.
Best, Ben
