Roold? Anyone heard of them...
 

I recently saved a rather dusty Roold from the dump, and intend on completely rebuilding it. In my research, I've found very little about them except for a few other threads here from years ago and an article at thebeautifulbycicle.com. I'm wondering if anyone has any more information about the company or anything that could help me further identify the bike.
From what I can tell it's a mid/low-end model with simplex prestige derailleurs, simplex depose down tube shifters, and Weinmann center pulls. I'll post some pictures/links once I hit my obligatory 10 posts. Thanks in advance!



Mine looks very similar to the pics posted by Scothoney, in his thread from 2016 but with quick-release skewers.

The cotter pins endured for a while on the low-end bikes, but I think yours is fairly old. Maybe late 1960's up to mid 1970's. I presume the bike came with some kind of center pull brakes which were popular in that era, but faded quickly by the late 70's.

The bike kind of reminds me of my Steyr from Austria.\

Anyway, during the 1970's, it wasn't uncommon to have rebadged store brand bikes.

Nope, Massachusetts.

I was guessing the early 70s. The date code on the rear derailleur is 1972, but I don't want to date the whole thing off of one component. There's also a pair of digits on the back of the head tube, 72 I think, and a 60-something. I'm not quite sure what those might mean. Other than that, I haven't found any other markings on the frame.

I have a sneaking suspicion that someone long ago crammed a 22.2mm stem into the 22.0mm headtube because I haven't been able to get it off with the usual wd-40 and smack of a mallet.

I saw one, once. It was during the bike boom. Top end model, full Campagnolo Record, and I believe a Vitus frame. To my untrained 14 year old eyes, it was beautiful.
Not a marque that is frequently seen.

I bought one in 1971 in Colorado. It had a TA crank, Campagnolo Nuovo Record derailleurs and high-flange hubs, leather Brooks saddle, aluminum tubular rims. It was white. I paid $300, or so, which was expensive back then. All I know is that it was made in France. I sold it about 10 years later.

Replying years later:

Yes, a friend I rode with in the mid-1960's rode that model. I remember that it was a Vitus frame because his father brought him a second bike from his home in France---an Oscar Egg, which, my friend Roger told me proudly, had a Reynolds 531 frame, unlike the Roold.
