Do we have to keep the derailleurs stock? I upgraded my 7700 25th Anniversary version with Omni Racer pulleys and titanium pulley bolts.

I'm not sure which years had that, if others, might have to read up again. 🤔
Since the OP also asked about fronts, I'll post a crappy pic (it was getting dark on me) of the FD-M735 I grabbed today. 😎

I still don't understand the reasoning, for some having gold letters, and some white. I saw the exact same model today, with gold letters, but the clamp size was too small. 😟 So it's not part numbers that determine it. 🤔

V GT Luxe with split cage for non-index. One of the indexing long cage Shimano XTs for the indexing era. My experience the V models are more durable than 1st generation Cyclone. Cyclone is more appealing to the eye.

For the rear derailleur, the white lettered XT is the 6 speed version, the gold lettered XT is the 7 speed I believe. The fronts, maybe not so much. I know there were some gold lettered fronts that had adjustable return spring tension, but I've also seen some gold lettered fronts without the spring tension adjustor.... but every white lettered XT front derailleur I've seen came on 6 speed bikes, and they didn't have the spring tension adjustment.

So my white-lettered 6-speed changer is actually the coolest one, here in C&V land? 😁 I noticed yesterday on the web, that some had that tension adjustment, but mine doesn't.

Thanks for the info, things are slightly less fuzzy now, in my head. 😁😉
