I've fit nominal 32mm tires that measured 27.0mm wide on MA40 rims (new Vittoria Corsas). Cannondale SRs tend to be pretty generous for a road bike, so fitting actual 28mm wide tires is a possibility for me, though as always, test it out yourself if you have a few sets of tires to play with.

If you check on the underside of one of the chainstays, you should be able to see a serial number. You can decode it here. From looking at the catalogs, and your very helpful photos, I'd say yours is a 1990 SR300 with the Suntour Accushift/Blaze 7-speed and the the steel fork. Cannondale played a bit fast and loose with colors, decal fonts, and forks during this year and the one surrounding it, at least from my limited experience with them. 1990 ST400 should have had a traditional steel fork, but had a unicrown, like your SR. My current 1989 SR has a Black Lightning paint job and decal color (gold), but the fork is aluminum and not steel like the Black Lightning had. Oh well!

Regardless of rank, your SR looks super sharp and will look killer with any modern componentry you put on it.

Back when that model came out. All of the models used the same frameset. Sometimes a different fork. That bicycle was STIFF to say the least but in my opinion probably the best one they made. Enjoy

They are definitely ready to rock RIGHT NOW, though good tires at proper pressures make a world of difference. With my 66cm SR and it's nearly-75° head tube angle, running the Vittoria Corsa 32s at something like 72/82 PSI (F/R) made it quite a decent ride, even over all the broken pavement around here. I thought the 36 spoke (straight gauge) MA40 wheels would add harshness, but they didn't. It all feels dialed. Tight, but dialed. Of course all the normal riding is acceptable, but it lives for smooth pavement and fast 90° bends. Did a few of those one night and it came alive. Great bike.

I've been mulling over a 120mm XA stem (up from the 110mm XA I have on it now) to slow the steering a touch and proportion it a little better, but it's got crazy angles everywhere, so it kind of doesn't matter. Pretty in that classic Cannondale funky way.

Okay, since we're now adding our C-dale R pictures to fender1 's thread, I'll add my '93 R600.

Mine is wearing Mavic Cosmic wheels from the mid 90s with Tufo tubular-clinchers (24mm). Despite my 220lb heft, I'm running the PSI at 80-85 rear and 70-75 front, with no issues and it provides a rather smooth ride.

At some point soon, I plan to switch the 9-speed Nashbar/microShift drive train to a 10-speed microShift compact system with a medium cage-length RD. I have all the components on hand, including a new CF seat post and Brooks CF Cambium saddle. The reduced weight should provide an increase in speed of .000001 mph in my average speed.

The Lancaster area has provided me with a number of nice finds when it comes to bikes and musical instruments! Like the one posted there always seem to be a number of nice, older Cannondales out that way. Maybe because they were made not to far from there? Its 137 miles from Lancaster to Bedford, where Cannondale's were made in the early days.
