You now, those funky one piece triangular shaped bar/stem jobbies? Nothing screams vintage MTB like a good ole bullmoose bar! I don't have one myself but I sure do want one. I'm still kicking myself for letting the Cook Brothers Racing bullmoose bar go when the shop I had previously worked at (Bicycle World, 4866 south Redwood Road, Salt Lake City, UT) closed down and got rid of all their old "junk" back in 1998 or so. So let me ogle yours until I can find one... please?

If you really want a set right now, a fair number are available on eBay at present (along with a fair number of mis-listed bullhorn bars, plus some other types that also come up when you search). 21.1mm, 22.2mm, and 1 1/8" threadless stem types are all there (didn't see any with stems for 1 1/8" threaded headsets, but I might have missed those). But with one or two exceptions, all of the true bullmoose bars there seem to be well north of $60.

Not my style, hence no pix of mine - 'cause I don't have any.

This is an 84/85 Norco Bigfoot as I found it. I changed the stem out for comfort when it was my commuter but I still have the bars.

I picked this up at the local Salvation Army 7ish years ago:



It's a Ross Force 1. No decals on tubes, just the headbadge.

Rims - Ukai, gold anodized

Hubs - SR? Sunshine? Sanshin? Gold anodized and tasty!

Tires - Rreplaced the fugly late 90's set with a pair of Cheng Shin Jackrabbits

Pedals - Shimano PD-MX15 ( NOT a set of DXs, as I originally thought but still pretty sweet )

Crank - Takagi Tourney AD

Chain - Unknown, but it was toast. I replaced it

Rear Cogs - 5 speed freewheel. It was seized up, soaked it in mineral spirits for a long while, dried it out, then an oil bath. Spins nicely now.

Well, I only have them on 2 bikes atmo, so here they are.

Here's the '85 Schwinn Cimarron I got as a frameset while working in Seattle. Built it up with stuff from my old junkyard A-D MTB. That one used a cruiser fork with a BMX stem and bars so I got warranty High Sierra bars from the shop for this one. The brake cable hanger had broken off.






I've been planning for years to put drops on it but just haven't gotten around to it.

The hi-rise Ritchey brazed Bullmoose on the brown Ritchey are ideal, perfect position for comfy cruising, absolutely love those bars & bike.
The brazed and chromed Nitto Bullmoose on the blueTimberwolf look the part, but I wouldn’t hesitate to swap them for a set like on my other bike!

yes, they are pricey. I got these from RivBike - with the recent inflation adjusted pricing. No one in the US had them. Never seen them used unless they are the 21.1 quill version.

I replaced Jones Bars with a threadless stem with an adapter- bit of an eyesore with many clamped joints.

They are more comfortable than the Jones. Probably saved a few grams. Look great.

These are all so lovely! Thanks for posting them up.... In the meantime, down to the local bike collective, "ask and ye shall receive". Scored a bullmoose handlebar to call my own for the princely sum of $5. I don't have pics yet but it is sitting out on my workbench now, eyeing my 89 Panasonic MC4500 I've posted elsewhere. When did we stop seeing bullmoose handlebars, anyway? I'm guessing by 1988 or so, because everyone wanted a Tioga T-Bone style stem by then.

Keep those bullmooses (bullmeese?) coming!

So, as I mentioned, I found some bullmoose of my own. The only candidate bikes I had to put them on were my 91 Wicked Fat Chance, and my 89 Panasonic MC4500. Neither bike came with a bullmoose bar from the factory. The Fat came with a T-Bone style, while the Panasonic came with the cast aluminum Nitto Dirt Drop style. I figured the Panasonic was the most appropriate choice as it is of lugged, brazed construction, so they went on it. With a little cleanup with WD-40 and #000 steel wool, they came out really nice.

Lots of puctures, I know, but I'm really happy with how this turned out. The fit is great with the bars sitting just about level with the saddle, and the reach is just right. I figured I might use that front brake cable housing stop hole to mount some kind of accessory in the future. Maybe. A light or flasher or something?

Looks fantastic, great job.

I would encourage you to go over it again with Turtle wax chrome polish and rust remover, it can get it all off and these always try to rerust IME.

And they will do it when you're not paying attention.

If you slather it on, let sit and repeat then scrub with brass bristle brush, it can all be gone.
