The frame is also identified as hand brazed; Chicago Schwinn's were not. So the bike is almost certainly a Schwinn-approved bike made in Japan, and the original derailleur on that bike was very likely a Shimano derailleur.

Do a bit of internet searching on the fillet brazen schwinns. If you have never seen the story, it is really quite interesting and well worth the time. Lots of hand work from craftsman from another era.

Edited to add: Damn - I'd read at least one of those articles some time ago. I'd forgotten two key points: 1. Paramount production was originally at Chicago (for some reason I was thinking it was always at a different location); and 2. I'd forgotten about the filet brazed Schwinns entirely. Occasionally need to get memory refreshed, even if it's painful sometimes. :) |
