What does Artificial Intelligence "think" of C&V?
I was kicking the virtual tires of ChatGPT, an AI chat system today. I thought I'd be clever and ask something obscure and fuzzy: "Why is restoring vintage bicycles satisfying to some people?" The results took about 10 seconds to returned and kind of surprised me. Not so sure about the welding and upholstery part but overall it's fairly on-point, and that's a little unsettling.

That's a higher quality AI program that most of the "customer service" AI bots I've dealt with.

We use a customer service AI thing at work and we fooled a customer that was a high level programmer. He was very impressed. I have a longish story but in a nutshell, Intel was funding AI hot and heavy ~10 years ago and they pulled the plug because it became too good and the engineers started asking themselves existential questions they couldn’t answer.
Note - that was 10 years ago…. I’ll stand by my welding and upholstery statement. 🙂 |
rhm has the upholstery part nailed.
Maybe ask the same question with “automobiles”, “furniture” or “sewing machines” instead of bikes and see if the answer is exactly the same. Well except AFAIK sewing machines don’t have upholstery. |

I have real doubts that this was AI generated. Looks more like the work of my publicist, who coincidentally works at that compay that [MENTION=536409]RustyJames[/MENTION] mentioned... looks like a hacker job to me.

Seems like rather generic stuff to me. Substitute vintage sewing machines, clocks, cars and trucks, etc., and the answers would be about the same. The first thing that came to mind was Dr. Sbaitso.
That said, all of this kind of stuff makes me appreciate my dog even more. |

Restoring vintage sewing machines can be a satisfying experience for a number of reasons. For one, it can be a fun and challenging project that allows someone to learn new skills and gain a deeper understanding of how these machines work. Additionally, vintage sewing machines can have a certain charm and character that newer machines lack, and restoring one can be a way to bring it back to its former beauty and functionality. Finally, some people may simply enjoy the process of taking something that is old and worn-out and making it look and work like new again. |
