PSA I guess? Bone shaker content

In my smallish town there is one other guy interested in riding and tinkering on vintage bikes. We have swapped and bought from each other a few times over the years. Today we swapped a an English path racer frameset for a set of MA40 rims. While we’re chatting, he mentions he picked up a couple of nice pennyfarthing bikes and I asked to take a look. They are all original except for the tires in the front one and saddle on the back one. He hopes to sell the back one to defray the cost of buying them both. He is not selling it cheap but if you’re serious about owning one of these I can connect you with him. Interesting feature - the big wheel on front bike is radial laced, rear bike 2 cross, tied and soldered.

Very nice and in good shape for the age. Cool part of cycling history, thanks for sharing. There used to be a high wheeler out front of a small bike shop up north . After looking it over a few times , I decided I would not ever want to try one at my age . Maybe when I was younger and could recover from a fall more easily!

I don't think I'd have the cajones to ride one of those but man, that is cool.

I raced in a short high-wheel criterium many years ago. I've wanted one ever since, but they always seem to be out of my price range. Please let me know, either in this thread or via personal message, how much he wants for it.

Yeah, guy told me he rode the one with the replacement tires a short distance without hurting himself. It’s pretty hilly around here and a short distance is all you have until the scare level really climbs. I might be willing to try one on a running track.

I’ll send you a PM Brent.

Most photos I can find are like obrentharris picture with high handlebars. The ones in the Spaghetti Legs photos have low handlebars. I had to page down a bit in the Google image search to find a photo. Can you imagine riding a bike with the grip behind your knee?

I know these things are passe' but they are so iconic, it seems like there should be more replicas on the market

Beautiful! I've been toying with the idea of buying one, but I also wonder how well I'd endure a fall from a high wheeler, especially a header.

Now that is extreme! No way I would try riding that at age 70. Maybe when I was young, on a dare.

^^^^

Id love to see one of those in person. Some, maybe most, of the video was sped up so hard to get a sense of how fast the guys were going through the corners. The leader had a freewheel mechanism which I’m sure helped through the corners.
