The Dutch are crazy

The bikes they're using are classic dutch single speeds, so it's on topic.

H**Y FREAKIN CRAP! :twitchy:

Says the lazy American about his people. ;)

We haven't got the means to fly to the moon. :( This was within budget. :)

That's insane but I bet the atmosphere is wonderful. NOt sure I'd do but might be fun to hang out with the crazies a bit

iab 12-30-22 01:09 PM

Ummmm..... They are going in the wrong direction. Just sayin.

jamesdak 12-30-22 01:20 PM

That has to be a blast and sucky at the same time. Hard to believe it's been 37 years now since I've been over there. I need to get back one day.

stardognine 12-30-22 03:43 PM

I've said a few times, how I never get a tailwind, always a headwind. Now I know what I've been training for. 🤪😋

cudak888 12-30-22 04:33 PM

Without even knowing Tom Scott did a video about it, I just knew the headwind contest would be front and center with any "the Dutch are crazy" headline,

Reminds me of one particular lazy bugger in the Bike Portland comments who said bike share is useless in areas with grades

Yep, maybe I get what little motivation I have from Moms side, VanReenan, pretty much Smith in Dutch which is my last name from Dads side, go figure. :twitchy:

Velo Mule 12-30-22 08:49 PM

Why not. It is not like there are mountain passes to have races up to. I think the biggest thing is to embrace what us cyclist hate. The spec' bike is interesting too.

canklecat 12-30-22 09:45 PM

I rewatch that and other videos on the headwinds contest just to keep things in context when I'm tempted to complain about riding on windy days in Texas. Makes our usual 15-20 mph winds with gusts to 30+ mph seem like a gentle breeze.

I love Dutch things:
Paintings of Johannes Vermeer and Van Gogh
Ti-Raleigh and Rabobank cycling teams
Orange jersey of national team, soccer and cycling.

And find another:lol:

their licorice ?
stroopwaffels?

Spaghetti Legs 12-31-22 01:34 AM

That is great, especially as it looks to be mostly regular joes doing it. I thought it was also Dutch but mostly looks to be in Belgium but check out strand racing. It looks to be the people who don’t race cyclocross in the winter race their bikes in the sand on the beaches.

I'll give em a try:)

It doesn't show up on any of my desktop browsers either. :foo: Had to use my phone (Android) browser to find out what this was about. Link: https ://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMinwf-kRlA

EDIT: had to add a space for it not to disappear as well.

Mucho gracias, seems my guess was correct.

The short race length helps.

47 years ago I had an 18 mile commute, up and over the Santa Monica mountains.
for those who might know, from Beverly Hills, up Benedict Canyon along a bit of Mulholland then down Coldwater Canyon, the Valley floor beyond. Typical was an hour, not bad including the climbing.
one night a stiff wind from the North, 45 mph with gusts up to 55.
it took near two hours, I was shattered.
it was small ring even descending, 42x17
the low gear at the time was 42x23.

fliplap 12-31-22 09:06 AM

Rode across that on my Brompton a few years back, apparently the wind is always terrible. Guy in velo-mobile passed me like I was standing still.

Fahrenheit531 12-31-22 09:14 AM

HAHAHAHA this landed in my YouTube feed last night and I almost gave it a thread. The algorithms are real, man.

Apparently it has to do with your cookie settings. Changing my settings to allow all cookies from this website made the video in the first post appear.

Niet so much.

I grew up in a heavily Dutch-American part of the country - this guy exemplifies the style and character of the locals. Fig pajamas FTW.
